Our son had hs statistics similar to the OP’s student, a bit higher SAT and a bit lower gpa(though his sub 3.6 wgpa placed him in the top 5% of his hs graduating class in a decent suburban hs).

Because he had a sizeable college fund to fall ack on, he ratched his list up a bit(RPI, Case, Oberlin, etc). He knew that there were no free rides possible but hoped to get the cost to a point similar to the in-state colleges. His research proved successful.

originaloog, congratulations. How did your son get the costs to in-state? Were they merit scholarships? What were his SATs?

Hovering, yes they were all merit scholarships ranging from $25k/yr at RPI and $17k at Case to a parsimonious $3k by Oberlin. He did his homework well.

I have problems with taking timed tests like the ACT or SAT. I have both asperger’s syndrom and ADHD and somtimes it is really hard for me to focus on things. Any little thing will distract me (air conditioner turning on as an example). Despite being in a room with one other kid and the teacher that was watching and having the extended time, I still scored low.

Wow, Hoveringmom, that conversion thing sucks! It’s amazing what poor manners some people have!

"Wow, Hoveringmom, that conversion thing sucks! It’s amazing what poor manners some people have! "

Oh, Endicott, it’s not really poor manners. First off, the street preacher was quite possibly mentally ill, and religion is extremely important to a person in that condition.

Also, people have various degrees of passion about trying to convert others. I happen to know for a fact that faith is a gift. I also know that God will reach out to every person, several times, and hopefully one of those times the person will be receptive. So I don’t feel the need to be ‘preachy’. Every person has his chance, and they do what they want with that chance.

In fact, I try to stay away from these topics, but your response just touched a chord in me. I value this site so much for the college info. The rest I usually ignore.

Best wishes!!

I know this is a late post, but do you mean univ of pitt? Now days, do they give good financial aid to out of state residents?
