Updated: Chances for ivies, second ivies, and publics, will chance back :)

You obviously have amazing SATs and a stellar GPA, plus some good, diverse ECs. You have a higher than average chance at any school you apply to, although Ivies, Stanford, MIT, and Caltech are reaches for everyone. I think that with a great essay and recs, you are in pretty good shape.

Stanford (applying under Restrictive Early Action): reach
Pomona: low reach
Brown: reach
Bowdoin: low reach
Penn: reach
Caltech: reach
MIT: reach
Harvey Mudd: reach
UCSD: match
UCLA: high match/low reach
UCSC: safety
UCSB: safety
UMich: low reach (because of OOS)

I also think that with your stats and background, you’d be a great candidate for Regents. Honestly, I think you have a very good application, but of course admissions are so objective so there’s no way to tell for sure :)

You’re in. That’s it.

Stanford, Pomona, CalTech, MIT

Those are the only schools that could plausibly reject you (not that they will.)

You’ll be completely fine :)

Chance me back!

The schools I labeled as reaches are reaches for everyone; you have a great chance at all of the schools you’re looking into.

Stanford (applying under Restrictive Early Action): reach
Pomona: reach
Brown: reach
Bowdoin: low reach
Penn: reach
Caltech: reach
MIT: reach
Harvey Mudd: high match
UCSD: low match
UCLA: match
UCSB: safety
UMich: low match

Great job! The only way your profile could improve is if you were to win a national competition, but really, you don’t need anything more.
Stanford (applying under Restrictive Early Action): Reach (attainable though)
Pomona: Low reach/high match
Brown: Low reach
Bowdoin: High match
Penn: Low reach
Caltech: Low reach
MIT: Low reach
Harvey Mudd: High match
UCSD: Low match
UCLA: Match
UCSC: Safety
UCSB: Safety
UMich: Low match

I’m planning on majoring in neuroscience too! How did you get to do all these amazing lab reseach opportunities? You have done A LOT.

I’m lucky to live in a major hub of neuroscience research, so labs are willing to take a lowly high school student. I took a class at UCSD over the summer, and went to my professors office hours. When we were discussing my interest (at the time, strongly in autism and the mirror neuron system) for my final project, she decided to introduce me to a professor who worked in that area at UCSD. We got along well, and when I asked if he could use an intern he agreed to take me in. That internship experience helped get me into the scripps internship, where I’m getting experience with stem cells and cellular neurobiology. It’s really a snowball effect, once you get one internship that helps tremendously with getting the next. Put yourself out there, introduce yourself to people, and be genuinely interested. Ask if they could use a volunteer, if nothing else dry-email. It can’t hurt. Good luck!

What class did you take? Good luck to you!

I took a course labeled Minds and Brains (COGS11), its a 100 level college class at UCSD in neuroscience.

AMAZING!! Academics part is perfect, ECs are OUTSTANDING, awards are amazing! As long as your essays are okay, you should be able to get in anywhere. It really helps that you started a few things and seem to be heavily involved in all that you’ve done and are currently doing. Your resum

Stanford (applying under Restrictive Early Action): reach
Brown:: low mid reach
Penn: low reach
Caltech: low reach
MIT: reach
UCSD: low reach/match
UCLA: safety
UMich: match

saratoga37, thank you for you feedback. I’m working on the essays now, I’m particularly enjoying UChicago’s Mantis Shrimp prompt. I’m awaiting the common app portal to open, beyond the UC and Common App essays there’s not many supplements I can bite into yet. It’s encouraging to hear about a similar story who had success in the application process.

In my opinion any of these schools would be absolutely lucky to have you. Every word of your application shines and I don’t think you can do anything more besides writing your essays and relaxing while the rest of us have high level anxiety attacks over our college decisions :). Good luck with the application process.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=1525190</a></p>

You have amazing academics and really dedicated and focused ECs… The fact that you have invested a lot of time into research and service will definitely benefit you… Out of curiosity, due to the particularly large amount of research you have done, are you planning on submitting any research papers?

I would say that you are basically in to any of those schools, even Stanford and MIT/Caltech!

Unfortunately, the research I have done is always a piece of a larger project. This has been beneficial to the labs I work in, but for the most part I’m working on an experiment that I didn’t design. Because it is not my original research, I cannot submit most of the papers I have contributed to, even if I preformed a large section of the experiments.

I would definitely hesitate to say you’re into any of the top schools (Stanford, MIT, Caltech, etc.). I do think you’re a very strong candidate, but there is absolutely nobody who is a shoo-in at those schools. I can’t speak to the rest – not familiar with most of those – but you are certainly a strong applicant.

Being a girl applying to MIT with high math scores puts you on par with MIT’s other female applicants, so it’s really not an advantage. Many of MIT’s female applicants have 780-800s on math (both SAT and the subject tests). Your research is much more definitive when it comes to schools like Caltech and MIT, and it will be a huge benefit to your application. That said, I was a similar student and still got rejected from Caltech. (But I am going to MIT, so it wasn’t all bad ;))

Good luck!

P.S. While I wouldn’t say you’re guaranteed any of the top schools you listed, I would say that you’re very likely to get at least one of them – I’m just not sure which it’ll be :)

edit: crossposted about your research. It’s okay if it’s not original research; working in a lab shows dedication, and a level of skill that they want in applicants. Write about it in your essays and show that you learned a lot! They love kids who did research :)

I’m absolutely going to write about my experience in labs, I’ve had a great mixture of working on the cellular and brain-wide scales, in a wet lab working with cell culture and in a EEG lab working with trial participants. Both have been great experiences. I’m planning on writing about my lab experiences in an essay, I’m just not sure where now that the common app no longer has a “choose your own” prompt :/

I’m just sitting here in complete awe. You’re amazing! I want to do something related to neurobiology when it’s time (I’m a junior)!

The only schools that I can imagine rejecting you are Stanford or the Ivies. I have friends who were very qualified but were rejected. Make sure to write an amazing essay! I also would not be surprised at all if you made it into Regents! So proud of you!

Chance me back? I’m a junior, and I’m trying to improve myself before senior year comes back! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1525564-chance-me-uc-berkeley-please.html#post16142820</a> Thanks!

blimey911, as long as you have AP Biology level knowledge, you can get involved in labs starting now. What colleges are close to you? The UCs all are research institutions, and if you live near one of them it wouldn’t be that hard to get involved in a lab. The earlier you start, the more experience you gain and the more valuable you are to labs. PM me if you would like to chat more about how to get into a lab. Good luck! You look to have your ducks in a row so to speak, stay on that track. :)

Stanford: Reach, but you still have a good chance. It’s Stanford, always a reach
Brown: Low Reach
Penn: Low Reach
Caltech: Reach
MIT: Reach
UCSD: Match
UCLA: Match
UCSC: Safety, by far
UCSB: Safety
UMich: Match
Harvey Mudd: Match
Pomona: Cal Poly Pomona??? if so then this is 100% admission why are people
saying reach??
