**updated vacancies for uf dorms**

I just updated my information! How do I see where I can choose to live?

Vacancies - Updated 5/5 8:50 a.m.

Area Name Male Female

Beaty Towers 0 1
Broward Area 0 0
Graham Area 18 6
Jennings Area 0 0
Lakeside Area 0 0
Murphree Area 28 5
Springs Area 0 0
Tolbert Area 3 0
Yulee Area 0 0

Does anyone know why so many spots opened in Beaty yesterday? I would have switched to beaty if I knew there were openings :/

What happens when all rooms are at 0?

@Gabby0721 - It looks like they are rationing out the rooms. lol. They just add more every so often. If you want a room in another building just check often and it may pop up.

UFstudent19 - If you have a housing contract, you’ll get a room. I’m sure they’ll be releasing some more soon.

As someone who is just doing his housing contract, should I base my hall type prefs on what’s posted here? (i.e. not bother putting Jennings as a preference)

The dorms open Aug. 17th; we were thinking of moving my daughter in on the 18th; is this a bad idea?

300 spots in Beaty East were being reserved for the Innovation Academy. It’s possible that they are releasing some of those to Fall entrants based on the number of IA students that have applied for housing. Just speculation.

Hey guys - Housing will answer all of your questions on their FB page, and they’re actually posting availability now daily. [UF Housing and Residence Education | Facebook](UF Housing).

And toproud: your daughter will sign up to check in. You can check in later than your appoinment time, but not before. Again, the facebook page will provide info.

Here’s some clarification from their FB page:
…this is the second year that [UF Housing is] offering room signup online. [UF Housing] offers room signup online as a direct result of feedback from residents and families in past years.

Previously, [UF Housing] made housing assignments for students and these assignments were based on application date and preferences. For many students with later application dates (applications received after November), [UF Housing] found that their preferences were no longer available by the time we got to their assignment. When we received a roommate request, we made assignments based on the roommate with the latest application date. We were also unable to make changes to the assignments that we gave students before the beginning of the academic year. This system, while it was time honored and it worked well, was very limiting for our residents.

Based on the feedback of our past residents who told us their concerns with the above issues, we decided to rework the system so that we could be as flexible and transparent as possible with room assignments. We had three major goals with the new system:

• You should be empowered to have the option of selecting your own room based on availability.

• You should be able to make changes to your assignment (based on availability) if you decide you want to live in a different space.

• You should be able to hold a space for a roommate without having to worry about the roommate’s application date.

With those three changes in mind, [UF Housing] opened the new online room signup site to the first round of students last year. While it may be hard to believe now, online room signup worked very well for our residents who had earlier application dates (November and earlier). More than 5000 of your fellow incoming residents successfully selected rooms (and made many room changes) [earlier]. [Later,] space became much more limited.

You are probably wondering why the space became so limited in the first place. Well, our goal is to open each year with as close to 100% of our rooms occupied as possible. We get a large majority of our funding from rent and so filling all of our spaces allows us to operate efficiently, offer the lowest rental rates possible, and offer the wide range of staffing, programming, and support services that make the on-campus experience special. Behind the scenes, in order to get to this 100% occupancy level, we spend a great deal of time considering, calculating, and forecasting a number of different contributing factors including the number of cancellations we receive, the number of people who sign up for a contract, and so on.

The result of this is that we accept more contracts than we have spaces. This may sound crazy, but we do this because we know a certain number of people are going to cancel (because of extenuating circumstances or because they will not be attending UF). We have been doing this for years and years and so we have a very good idea of what number of students will be canceling.

We have come to the time of the year where the number of people waiting to be assigned to a space exceeds the number of spaces available. Because signup is online (unlike other institutions), students are actually able to see that this happens during the course of room assignments. We are fully aware that this has caused some frustration and anxiety for many of you. We understand how important housing is and the last thing we want is for any of you to experience uncertainty and anxiety regarding where you are going to live. For this, we sincerely apologize and hope this letter will help ease the frustrations.

At this point, we want you to think of the room signup site as more of an optional step that is available only if you wish to use it. We have heard the stories of many of you spending a great deal of time clicking over and over in the hopes of signing up for a room. This has concerned us because this is not what the site is designed to do.

Everyone who has a contract with us will receive an on-campus housing space. We guarantee this. If you have not been assigned to a space yet, and you decide not to visit the room signup site, we will manually assign you to a space. Because we receive cancellations for a variety of room types at this time of the year, we don’t feel that anyone will be disadvantaged if you allow us to make your assignment for you. In fact, this is the easiest (and probably the best) way to receive a room assignment at this point.

If you decide that you would like to continue utilizing the online room signup site, we will post periodically on Facebook when we release spaces for signup. Unfortunately, due to the sporadic nature of cancellations, we cannot give exact dates and times when we are going to do this.

We will be closing online room signup on August 1st. If you have decided not to sign up for a room or have been unable to sign up for a room at this time, we will begin to manually assign you to a room during the first week of August.

I would like to reiterate that feedback is extremely important to us. We created online room signup because of resident feedback from previous years. Our promise to you is that we will continue to adjust room signup (and everything else in on-campus housing) based on your feedback. While we have enjoyed all of the positive feedback that we received from our students who had early application dates, we feel that it is just as important that we consider feedback from students and families that have found online room signup to be frustrating or stressful in any way.

We want you to have as convenient, easy, and flexible a time in receiving on-campus housing as possible. We also want you to have trust and confidence that our system is as fair as it can be and that we will do everything possible to serve everyone as best we can. Each year, we meet in early September to review how the assignment process went and how we can better communicate with next year’s round of incoming students. If you have not already, please contact me at thomasl@housing.ufl.edu with any feedback that you may have. This feedback will be discussed during the September meeting and will help us further improve how we handle room assignments.

I appreciate your continued patience as we work through what we know is a very important and anxious time for all of our incoming Gators. If you have any questions or concerns relating to your particular room assignment, please feel free to call us during regular business hours (8am to 5pm on Monday through Friday) at 352-392-2161.
