UPenn Economics

How prestigious is economics at UPenn? I know that someone just asked whether this major is overshadowed by Wharton, but I was wondering how it ranks against other top schools. Would it be one of the top undergraduate economic programs in the nation in terms of future opportunities for jobs and graduate schools?

Penn’s Economics Department generally ranks among the top 10 in the nation.

@45 Percenter, aren’t those graduate rankings?

And how would you know they are not judging the econ degree from Wharton?

BS from Wharton != BA in economics from College. They are not appraised as one set (same way as BA in econ not calculated towards Wharton’s rivalry with Stern, McIntire, etc).

The econ degree is very popular and very good at penn. recruitment is top-notch because Wharton gets firms to recruit but once they are on campus, no one really has the advantage.

This is the career survey for Penn’s Class of 2013. Check out the placement for Econ majors on page 15.

There really aren’t any widely respected rankings of the academic reputations of specific undergraduate liberal arts programs, and so the graduate rankings are used as proxies.

Furthermore, at top schools like Penn (and Duke ;)), undergrads will generally have the benefit of the same faculty who teach grad students (and even the same courses, in many instances), especially in the upper-level courses in their majors. Undergrads also can participate in some of the research and other departmental activities that attract the top grad students (and contribute to top graduate rankings).

Better than any Ivy that isn’t Harvard or Princeton (and probably Yale too).
