UPENN engineering or CMU compsci?

okay so I know that i want to major in compsci (maybe…engineering too) with a possibility of double majoring in finance.

CMU is reputed to be a better compsci or engineering school, but since i’m only going there for undergrad, i’m thinking it wouldn’t be that different from going to compsci in upenn. I feel as if CMU undergrad is not as competitive to get in, and if I will get the same education, why can’t I go to upenn?

Could you PLEASE confirm or reject my decision? I only have about 10 days left…

Hey,

Since both schools have respectable compsci programs, try to base your decision off of the other things besides academics. Maybe take a look at extracurriculars, campus life, etc. and see which one better fits your needs. Feel free to post your feelings on other areas of college life on here, and maybe people can help guide your thoughts a little better.

Best of luck.

Even though CMU is ranked higher in compsci than Penn, I would choose Penn because I believe it offers you a much better overall undergraduate experience, plus the prestige associated with an ivy league education. Furthermore, if you are interested in finance, you have the Wharton School. Good luck with your decision.

ya what he said. i'm in almost the exact situation as you (CS major, possible interest in business). i got into penn SEAS and CMU too, except I haven't been considering CMU, since Berkeley I think is similar to CMU's appeal but better IMO.

I visited Berkeley and Penn, didn't like Berkeley and liked Penn. You should talk to Penn students about your options once there, such as a dual degree, M&T, etc. I'm probably going to choose Penn, but I haven't visited Columbia SEAS yet. If you want details of what I have researched about my/our options, pm me. Let me know your decision :)

hmm.. there are few thinsg i'm afraid about penn..
Because penn engineering is much bigger than cmu compsci, I'm afraid that i'll be given less research opportunities and less attention...

also I took a look at people who went to gradschool from penn... most of them continue their phD at penn while people from cmu get their degree from berkley, stanford, MIT, and CMU...

Hm do you have the site/source for this?

And you're comparing the whole Penn engineering with CMU school of CS? I think Penn SEAS one grade level is about 400 or so. And if you want to double major in finance, the dual degree at Penn is awesome. I can only give you info about Penn, though I did get into CMU too

hmm sources are debatable but
<a href="http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/seas/survey2005.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/seas/survey2005.pdf</a>
compare this against
<a href="http://www.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/career/employ/salary/scs.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/career/employ/salary/scs.pdf</a></p>

Hey, I'm in the same exact position! In a serious rut between CMU CS and Penn Digital Media Design (SEAS).

Penn DMD from what I heard is pretty good. they win awards. i'm considering it myself too. in terms of pure CS, of course CMU is better, thogh from what i heard Penn CS is pretty good. I'd say to judge the schools based on what other things you want to do (if business, you can't go wrong with Penn undergrad), the student body's characteristic, the location, environment etc, which is what I"m doing at the moment

I decided to go to CMU. I really like the nerdy atmosphere in SCS, and because i know that CS is what i want to do, I am going to go to CMU unless I get off that caltech's waiting list. EA, Google, MS are trying to employ CMU kids right out of undergrad, and i like practical education. At least I can sorta expect to get paid 10k more when i graduate from SCS hahahaha

if you are interested you should read the same thread in CMU's side..

They employ here too...

Yes they do. I know several Penn CS majors interning for Microsoft and Google.
