UPenn M&T vs. Northwestern HPME

I've been fortunate enough to be accepted both to the dual degree Jerome Fisher M&T Program (Engineering + Wharton) and the Northwestern HPME (7-year B.S./M.D.) program. Currently, I'm set on medicine and clinical research as my future career, but I can't guarantee that my choices will not change during my undergraduate years. Considering also that I am an international student (thus making it more difficult to get jobs, apply to medical school, etc), and considering that HPME basically guarantees entrance to the Feinberg medical school (no MCATs, 3.5 GPA to maintain), do any of you have advice on which I should choose?

M&T is not at all a fit for medicine and clinical research. I have friends who are in the M&T program. Some tell me that they plan on going into technical designing, where they would use their engineering skills to design products, then using what they learn from Wharton to market the product. Others are leaning toward biomedical engineering, but again, with a focus on designing medical products and marketing them. If you want to go to Med school, again, M&T is not a good fit. Many M&T students go for an MBA instead.

I can’t judge much about the Northwestern program, since I’ve only heard little bits of information about it. However, from what you’ve written, HPME definitely seems like a good fit. In addition, a classmate of mine in high school told me that the program is extremely selective (although M&T may be equally selective).

Best of luck! And for your citizenship issue, hopefully in 7 years, you will become a permanent resident!

^ he couldn’t have said it better

Hi ToughDecision123, congrats on getting accepted to HPME.
I am also an international student currently in my sophmore year in Asia doing IB Diploma. My dream is to get into HPME. Being an international student, please advice me about the requirements to get into this program/into any other BS/MD combined programs in US. Very anxious to hear from you.
Thanks.

Good afternoon,

I have been granted admittance to both Penn’s M&T program as well as Cornell’s school of Engineering.

I am a math and science guy. But I do not want to have a profession in Engineering. My plan is Business with an Engineering background. What I am struggling with is I am not sure if it is better to have an engineering background from a good engineering school like cornell, then go to grad school for Business. OR should i go to Penn for a lesser engineering program, but a potential ability to cruise right from bachelors into WHARTON business MBA program?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help
