I have no idea how to solve this question..

90n + 23p = 4523

If n and p are positive integers in the equation above, what is one possible value of n + p?

I have no idea how to solve this question..

90n + 23p = 4523

If n and p are positive integers in the equation above, what is one possible value of n + p?

N could be 50 and P could be 1.
90(50)+23(1)=4523

n+p=51

a simple way to do this is to look at 4523. You want to find something that is simple instead of endlessly plugging in numbers.

You can split it into 90x= a; 23y = b. a+b = 4523. this can be done with 4500 (this looks like 9x5 which equals 45) and 23.
divide 90 into 4500 and you get 50.
divide 23 into 23 and you get 1.

plug em in to see if they work.

and viola you got an answer.

thanks anhtimmy!

^Good job.
Remember though an equation with more than one unknown number can not be solved in the good old way. You need to use a little imagination to make an educated guess as to what the numbers can be.
