I got into Stony Brook and Buffalo’s Honors College. I plan on majoring in biomedical engineering. I like both of the school, but my parents want me to go to Stony Brook because they feel there are more opportunities being closer to the city. There is only a 6 dollar difference between the financial aid for both, so money isn’t a factor. Which school do you think I should go to and why?
A few comments:
–Stony Brook is over an hour outside of NYC so I don’t think being there will give you additional opportunities.
–Stony Brook does have a particularly strong reputation in the STEM fields.
–Have you visited? Do you have a preference?
–Buffalo may be the more social-oriented school.
Stony brook is known as a commuter campus. You may want to look at the communities in both places.
Stony Brook is closer to NYC and unlike the other comment, I think it makes a big difference in terms of opportunity. You will simply go to NYC more often from SB rather than Buffalo. More kids will have contacts there. The profs will have contacts there. Career Services probably–you can ask them the list of orgs that recruit on campus and/or where interns go to work. Comparing the two lists from each school will help you figure out which has more of a NYC influence.
