My S is Puerto-Rican and Irish, Deomocrat from New York. He knows some people at Bucknell, so he wants me to take him to visit, and may apply. I know that there is not a ton of diversity at bucknell, but is the campus culture generally accepting? I hear that frats are huge. Are they low key or out of control? Is it very similar to Lehigh? We visited there in July and my S liked thecampus, but felt that the school was ruled by the jock/frat crowd.

I have the same question, but instead of being S puerto-rican and Irish and a democrat from New York I'm a female, black, and a democrat from ohio. So this serves as a bump

I'm new to cc. What does "bump" mean?

it brings up the post higher so it's more likely to be seen.

so if when people look at this forum they see

thread 1
thread 2
thread 3
your thread

a bump would bring yours to the top
it also brings it to the top for the new posts feature

Thanks. Hopefully someone will answer our question.

waves Sorry, I haven't cruised by this board lately.

My son has enjoyed Bucknell immensely. While he is white,

*he is not an engineer (Poli Sci/Philo major),
*doesn't plan to rush (he's into the live music scene),
*he's a democrat (soph representative for the Dem Club and a contributor to "All That's Left" --their publication) and
*a Texan (only 8 Texans came last year.)

I asked him about the political climate and he said that most kids are apathetically left leaning. The BUCC (conservatives) have more money and tend to be vocal, but there are more registered Dems. The Dem club won best PA campus award last year and hosted a big convention. So, which ever way you lean, there is a club for you. Or if you choose not to lean, you can also do that.

As for the frats--he's not planning to rush. Freshmen can't rush so you would have a year to sort out your feelings about the Greek system. He likes the live music scene, performs at Open Mic night and goes to a lot of concerts. He doesn't feel he needs to go Greek to have a social life.

I would suggest you visit the school on a non-minority event weekend to see how you feel about the climate.

My son leaves in one week to head back for another year, and he can't wait, so consider me enthusiatically biased. :)

Thanks, Texastaximom. We plan to visit in the next few weeks, and hope to get a better idea at then.
