Ursinus College EARLY ACTION Class of 2023 Thread

D accepted today with Ursinus Scholarship ($28k)! She is a recruited athlete and had a great overnight visit with the team. She felt that they were close, but all had friendships outside the team as well. It seems like a super supportive environment for a student who still needs to figure out what to do with her life.

S accepted today with Ursinus Scholarship! Planning a visit soon. Washington College was pretty generous with the overall aid package, so we’re waiting to see what Ursinus comes back with. Those are probably the top 2 so far. Waiting to hear from Juniata.

My son was accepted last week with large merit scholarship. He really liked the school when we visited but it was summer and not many kids around. He will need to go back and spend some time. He really needs a small supportive yet challenging school so this was high on his list. He plays tennis but I doubt he would make the team. Hope he could do club or intramural there.

@Leao114 - whaat spot does your son play on his HS tennis team? Ursinus has a lot of athletes but it is not Division 1 so he may be able to make the team.

He wasn’t on the high school team. Tried out in 9th grade didn’t make it and didn’t want to try again in 10th. He continued to play tennis but he isn’t a very competitive person. Sports at our high school are really competitive. He doesn’t have that drive.

It wasn’t on her admission portal, but I believe there is also a $2,500 legacy scholarship because I am an alum.

Longhaul - congrats to your D! My S was also accepted with generous merit. He is waiting to hear from a few more schools.
His concern about Ursinus is that he keeps hearing it is s “sporty” school. What is your view of this? Also, does it have a rep of being a drinking school? Thanks for any input!

@Leigh22 I believe about half of the student body is on a team, which is a lot percentagewise. But I also think the teams serve as those students’ tribes. My D is not on a team but has found her own niche. I will say that she is an introvert and is not looking to have a big group to hang with and was not interested in joining a sorority.

There is drinking there but it seems to be limited to one particular dorm. I don’t think it’s much different from any other small college campus.

Are the sororities non-residential?

@dadof2d the sororities do not have houses but often several women will try to live in the same Ursinus dorm house.

^ Thanks

@dadof2d , many if the sororities are “local” and not National. This means no National dues and subsequently no $ for the organization to own real estate.

Basically, all those in a sorority go into housing lottery and try to find groups of rooms together or in a single house. So, you will hear students refer to houses ad this sorority or that fraternity, but legally it is all UC housing that any student with the correct lottery pick can reside.

@Leigh22 , my daughter is not athletic. The idea it is sporty comes from the fact it is a small school with sports that need to carry large roosters. For example, football teams are large. Everyone at a school UCs size will know a football player. At some point, students go support those they know who play. Gives the idea the school is a "sports " school.

I see it more as the school community supports classmates.

Hi, chiming in here. My D is a recruited athlete and was just accepted with nice merit. Ursinus found her, it wasn’t on our radar at all before the coach reached out. She was skeptical at first but now it seems to be top of her list! She’s undecided academically, and has acceptances in hand from Dickinson and Hobart & William Smith so far. Waiting on three other decisions. She’s going back to Ursinus for an overnight later this month. It’s certainly small, but the more I learn about the school the more I like it. We’ll see what happens!

@atanvarne what is she interested in studying? And what sport?

Feel free to PM me with any questions!

@surfcity Thanks! She’s being recruited for track (she throws) but also plays basketball. Being able to do both is another big plus of such a small school. As for academics she’s wide open, liberal arts all the way, looking for a great education and to learn what comes next. The only thing she’s sure about is that she is not interested in pursuing more math. :))

Has anyone had any experience with the office of Accessibility at Ursinus. Just wondering how helpful the school has been if your kid has executive functioning issues and needs help to stay organized. Son has had an IEP since grade school and throughout high school. He has been accepted and we are trying to figure out how easy it will be for him to access help and the schools attitudes towards kids who might need extra support for LD.

@Leao114 , I am an alum and my D was accepted. She is choosing not to attend, but we asked many questions of Disability Services when applied.

The services were on par with other schools DD applied and Bama where DS attended.

None are great for Executive Functioning as all require student to start process each semester.

Ursinus can provide Note Takers, secluded test taking and extended time. I believe priority registration too, but since courses don’t fill up at UC, that wasn’t really something we focused on at UC and I didn’t keep notes of that aspect.

My D has had some accommodations - not the type you are describing but lots on interaction with the director of accommodations (or whatever the position is called). He is very nice and has been helpful - my D has had to make sure she follows up on things too of course. I do think they are willing to help in any way they can, but like in any situation you need to ask for what you need. The Dean of Students is very good too and the Institute for Student Success has resources…
