US NEWS Ranking, A few surprises

@Fisherman99 Next year. This is a jim mora era recruiting class and team. With the amount of decommits when mora got fired kelly is working with the best he got. Dtr needs some time but he’s got the base of a future star.

As usual the thread ends up being overrun by Californians talking about CA schools…you guys are everywhere.

Well, don’t hold your breath. Chip Kelly was a complete failure with the 49ers. And they didn’t do much last year (6-7) with a first round NFL draft pick by the name of Josh Rosen. But I’ll be rooting for them against USC.

Since I started all the Michigan comments but geez you people are hating on Michigan >:) but I discovered it seems to be the warm weather states Florida, California and Texas. Since it’s obvious you are just jealous of the freezing cold weather. All the my school is better then your school is sorta sad. They are all great schools. The topic of choosing a school based on sports if all else is same /similar… Well… Yeah! Of course! Illinois engineering VS Michigan engineering… Hmm…

Some how Illinois is ranked higher with all the Michigan engineering departments ranked higher then Illinois but I digress… Except for the Rose Bowl… There is nothing like a football game at Michigan!

@sushiritto, I’d take Chip Kelley any day over Clay Helton. Look for Colorado to win the PAC 12 this year. USC will have another disappointing year until they get a decent coach and staff.

@Knowsstuff, been to the the Rose Bowl many times, been to the Colosseum many times, been to the Shoe at Ohio State, between the hedges at UGA, and to Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium in Austin, but without a doubt, the Big House was the most impressive and iconic, when we saw the Wolverines in 2016 on a college tour. Go Blue!

CA? Best schools, best weather, and best surfing. =))

At this rate, all the UC’s will be in the USNWR Top 30. :-bd

Attending a game at the Big House is on my bucket list and hope to attend a game this season. BTW, the CFP (College Football Playoff) Championship game is being held, where else, in CA at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

@10s4life …True…not sure Chip Kelly can turn it around that fast next year but we shall see. USC looks better so far as well but they may have a chance if they play as bad as they did against Stanford last week.

@Knowsstuff …Jim Harbaugh did great at Stanford and is hanging in there at Michigan…hasn’t won those big bowl games though…will see if he can turn that around soon.

@Fisherman99 you just did something I never noticed before… You just linked to yourself

I equate Michigan to the Chicago Bears. Lots of potential. New quarterback, good defence, individual really good players. Good running backs. Good coaches in every phase. Now they both just have to figure out how to play 4 quarters!!! Hate when teams beat themselves :((

@CU123 California makes up 12% of the US population. That, and 10 of the top 45 schools are in CA, so…

@got2laugh is spot on… A lot of these schools are very similar. We are from Atlanta and the choices last year basically came down to OSU, UGA, and UF. UF is now ranked in the 30’s , UGA in the 40’s and OSU is still ranked in the mids 50’s… To me all these schools are peers and cant imagine choosing one over the other based on rankings They are all in the same tier of schools. It comes down to strength of program, fit, and financials. I still cant see how UF is ranked the same as GTECH which I do not see them as peers.

I would agree with someone else that tier ranking makes more sense.

oh since I see I few pro Michigan people here… Go Bucks!!! and for the poor UCLA fans O-2 OUCH!

I don’t understand what is going on in the UC System and I don’t think that my son’s experience at UCB 8 years ago compares whatsoever to his siblings who attend(ed) private universities.
The dorm was horrendous and far away, most of his classes were taught by TA’s( and somewhere between 150-600 students/class), and the place was just grungy all over.
He is my oldest and the others chose fine U’s-outside CA- that offered them great aid packages.
It is my opinion that the UC’s are HIGHLY overrated as far as undergraduate experience.
We are CA residents.

The Vanderbilt rise is pretty cool.

UF freshmen class in notorious for taking lots of classes either online or in a large auditorium with TVs…

We are Ca residents too and have many family members and friends kids who attend UCB. I cannot agree with @dragonmom3 more that UCs are highly overrated and overpriced for their lack of attention to students. Some popular classes at UCB enroll over a thousand kids. In comparison, at my kid’s private college freshmen classes are taught by professors (some of them even Nobel laureate) limited to twelve kids.

@dragonmom Cal is notorious for TAs teaching actual classes. My sister is experiencing that rn. Ucla is unique in that except for lab courses, the classes are all taught by actual faculty. TAs only do discussion sections. Class sizes at Ucla for the lower div level hover around 180-220. Upper div classes and major specific ones are almost always 70 or less. For Ucla at least. Your UC experience may vary.

TAs do not lead big lectures. They do run smaller discussion sections associated with big lectures run by a faculty member.

But yes, like many public universities, the UCs are a relatively economy class experience compared to rich private schools, even though the material taught in the courses is good quality.

Maybe Stanford’s lower USNWR ranking, along with more spots and not releasing acceptance rate data, will help them increase acceptance rate and reduce applications.

The only reason Stanford is 7th is because there was a 4-way tie for 3rd, but when you’re at that level, the difference in ranking is little more than statistical noise IMO. Same with Cal falling behind UCLA. They’re both still 20-ish. Who would care about the difference enough to pick one over the other just for that reason? Yet, I know it happens.

In fact, I’m always surprised that anyone would be interested in both Harvard and Stanford, or both UCLA and Cal. They have such completely different vibes that it’s hard for me to imagine how anyone could think both would be a good fit.

There’s quite a difference between writing specific essays for Harvard and Stanford and ticking one more box to apply to both UCLA and Cal. I’m more surprised by those in-state kids who select a limited subset of the UCs to send their application to if the cost of the application fee isn’t an issue, especially as it’s hard to predict which ones you’ll actually be admitted to, and the value for money for many in-state kids is pretty impressive.
