US residents...What made you choose Mcgill?

Why did you choose Mcgill over any of the other schools you were accepted to? And what schools did you reject for Mcgill?

i am not a US resident..but just for ur info..i rejected Univ of Toronto , Queen's which all give me scholarships .... and I went to McGill which gives me none

Cheap..Doesn't require any recommendations, essays, etc.

it's comparable to any of the top schools in the states, and offers an amazing student living environment... plus the price.

rejected carnegie mellon u. here for mcgill. mcgills cheaper, offers great education, great city, international rep. plus i hated cmu when i went there, so depressing. people are happier at mcgill. and cultural education..

oh and i accepted mcgill over northwestern, bu, vassar, sarah lawrence, and oberlin, plus a few music conservatories...

I accepted McGill over Cornell & University of Rochester. Basically it came down to Montreal vs. Ithaca...and it was no longer any contest. :)

Damn...You guys rejected CMU, Cornell, Oberlin, Northwestern and all over McGill?

yup, and i couldn't be happier!

rideltrain:

Would you elaborate on the reasons for selecting McGill, particularly in the music area? I have a rising sophomore who loves jazz and languages and I'm looking at McGill as a possibility....

Do you need to know French to be comfortable there? What's the social scene (read drinking habits) for students there? What's your experience with large classes versus smaller classes?

i chose mcgill because i wanted to get away from my parents who tried to choose my college for me

wow..turned down Cornell for McGill..must be a big big decision......

yeah, it was a big decision, but when i finally made it, i asked myself why i hesitated for so long, it seemed so natural...mcgill was obviously the place for me and i've never yet regreted my decision

those who were accepted, what were your stats?

jazzymom: I visited Montreal for a while and I knew very little French (after just having completed French 1). Everything in Montreal is bilingual (English/French) so you shouldn't have a problem, although all the road signs, bus announcements, subway announcements etc. were in French.

You just need to know basic conversational French. :)

Thanks. Kind of you to reply.

Excellent education for a great price. No, it isn't Cornell, or anything like that, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great school...from what I've seen, McGill has students from v. diverse backgrounds, which makes for a wholesome experience. Living in Montreal is also exciting - it's sort of an advantage over going to a school where one is used to the location. I feel McGill would really give me, a student from the US, a chance to become independent. Oh, it has a great reputation with grad schools.

no its isnt cornell...its a lot better...tats for sure

almost every ranking i have seen has placed McGill above Cornell.

i rejected cornell to come to mcgill as well...i really cant see anyone in their right might would choose cornell over mcgill...
cornell has a better repuatation than mcgill in america...but internationally mcgill is better regarded...its also 5x cheaper, there is the montreal factor, and more importantly u will have social life in mcgill...

That's interesting. I also rejected Cornell over McGill... There were two reasond for this:

McGill's higher international reputation.

McGill's reputation in linguistics, which will possibly be my major there.

what reputation are you referring to?
