USA Biology Olympiad 2006

I'm not sure. On a different note, was this year's semifinal more in line with National Final theoretical sections than was last year's?

there were a lot of botany questions on this year's test...the entire back page of the semifinals free reponse was a chart on plants =X

@thezookeeper
yes your teacher would have to login, unless you were selected as a camp member...then Ms. Reedy would tell you your score.

@scorcher999
i'm sorry to hear that...if you had only gotten 3.5 more points on your free response =(

Don't tell me 103 was the cutoff...

80 on the multiple choice...22.5 on the FR...

Heh... when you get to camp you'll discover the reason for that reeaaaal fast.

Shiddy,

If you got 102.5 and the cutoff is 103, there's a decent chance you'll still make it if someone decides not to go. Don't quote me on this though.

like me :P

damnit...i hate botany

How do you start USABO at your school? What's next year's deadline?
What about the other olympiads?

you don't have to start USABO...just apply. GC works...biology also works.

same with the other olympiads...i actually pushed for USNCO last year...self-nominated and had school pay the cost.

if you succeed then the international olympiad scene catches on at your school.

If I start it, can I go for it automatically?

define start.

usabo is there already...all you need to do is register for the open exam. be aware that each school has to pay $70-75 (forgot) for the registration fee regardless of the number of interested students so if the school won't pay the fee you might as well get a couple of your friends together to split the cost and take the open exam together.

I mean, if I start getting my school to participate in USABO? Is there a deadline for registering?

if i'm not mistaken, you register by early feb. or late jan.

they're pretty lenient about open exam though as they are still trying to attract more attention.

your best bet would be to contact ms. reedy at the email address listed on the CEE USABO site. she is really prompt about answering emails (except this week as the CEE office is closed for good friday).

calling the CEE office would be good too.

CEE office will open on Monday at 8/9? as normal.

Hey, has anyone gotten any Finals-related information, like the subjects we're supposed to work on, or any logistics stuff? I heard they were sending that out on the 14th.

no the CEE office is closed for Good Friday. the information will arrive next week.

does this mean that you made camp Snafu?

cooljoe, start here: http://www.cee.org/usabo/index.shtml

Thanks.

I know this is somewhat off topic, but would AP Chem, AP Physics B, and AP Computer Science AB help one to score decently on the UNSCO, Physics Olympiad, and USACO respectively?

AP Chem would not help for USNCO. AP Physics B or C would not help for USPhO. just like how AP Bio does not help for USABO.

massive side studying (or lack thereof) is the way to go for those.

i've never taken the USACO so i can't speak about that, but i expect it to be the same way

I disagree, slurpz. From my experience, AP Chem is more than enough for USNCO and AP Bio is more than enough for USABO. I agree that AP Physics B probably won't be enough for USAPhO, however; you may get past the first exam, but you really do need to look at stuff outside the classroom to do well on the semifinal test. At least in my school, AP Chem and AP Bio seemed to prep me much better for olympiads than AP Physics did. Not sure about USACO, though; nobody in my school seems to really care about it :P

Where do you get these "side studying" materials? (Examples please)Unlike biology, physics and chem seem more about application than memorization. I'm guessing those advanced Stanford EPGY courses would help for USPhO?

Has anyone here made it pretty far in the national olympiads? Would you please tell us what books/materials you used to help study or what classes you took?
