Hi i'm a student from Singapore, 17. I completed my O-levels last year and I have plans to continuing my education overseas. Do you have any ideas where my O levels certificate can get me in the states?

Any college that allows admission with only an O levels cert? Or should I take an A-levels certificate and enter a university there? Suggestions please?

hello ash
I did my O levels in 2009 and took 8 examinations, securing 6 A’s and 2 B’s.
BUT, now i am also doing my A levels in 4 subjects: maths physics chemistry and biology. This year I am also applying in to universities abroad. By the way, I am from Pakistan.
But I have heard students going abroad after completing O levels and getting admission into a good high school in USA. Over there by maintaining a very good GPA over there, they can get into a good college/university.
Don’t know a lot but still I thought I’d reply.
hope it helps.

hie ash.you may be able to get into some less competitive schools, but I strongly advise you to take Alevels.they will prepare you better for college and help you get into a better school.

woah ur O levels score is pretty awesome! i only took 6 subjects and only got 2 As. So i’ve pretty low hope on getting into any good schools anymore. what if i get above average scores for my A levels? can it cover my horrible O levels score?

I wasn’t very sensible as a child and didn’t perform especially after 10yr old, cause my parents separated. I guess that was when I never performed well anymore. Before that I always get scholarships and score top in class. But that was so long ago, and I was so young, so I guess it has nothing to do with my intellect and study ability.

But I’ll study hard and try to score well in my A levels. I just hope it can help compensate my horrible O levels result.

Most schools accept O Level results for admission, but usually people take would have taken A Levels, so you be at an disadvantage. If you can get good results for A Level, I would strongly recommend you to take them. I’m not sure about other countries, but I’ll warn you that Singapore’s A Levels are not easy, there must be considerable effort put in.

You can include your condition (parent separation) in the applications and explain why you did not do well during your O Levels. And if you could produce good A Level results to further reinforce the point that your O Level results were not a result of (to put it bluntly) lack of intellectual capability/laziness etc, that would really make it even more impressive.

For most part, there is a particular section in those applications where you can write about your conditions etc. Try not to write your personal statements on that, cos it’s wasting a chance to show the college other sides of you. If not, you can ask your counselor or teacher to mention that in your recommendation.

What kind of places are you thinking of going to? If you’re talking Ivies or places with ridiculous admissions rates, don’t count on it. Especially if your school does offer A Levels, it’s just not right, people with perfect stats do get rejected, so unless you have amazing ECAs I highly encourage you to take A Levels.

I took my IGCSE (equivalent to O Levels) 2 years ago, I got 6As and 2Bs. I got 3As and 1B at As level, taking my full A Levels next May.

Most high-ranked American universities will tell you you need to complete your school system’s educational requirements, ie. if you only take O Levels you’re stopping school after sophomore year and going right into university? The courseload would be too much to handle.

People get mostly As at IGCSE/O Level at my school, and they are still finding A Level horrendously difficult, imagine how much of a big step moving right on to unviersity classes would be?

hi everybody…
i’m a non-singaporean student has just placed to sec 3 to sec school in singapore which is not a top gov. sec school at all…
there’s no way i can transfer to top sec school (or apply as 2012 , i will be at sec 4)…
AS it is impossible to apply to top JC without good background of CCA (WHICH YOU CANNOT BUILD IN SEC 3) and HIGHER MOTHER TONGUE…

AFTER O LEVEL:
should i go to US PREP COLLEGE or Australia to later apply to US Uni?
there’s no way i will have CCA ACHIEVEMENT(S) I think…

oh yeah i am thinking this because i am told that admission from singapore to top tier uni USA is very very strict and hard!! I will have to compete with my friends from RI and HCI!!

" i do have 2 sisters who are Australia PR Living in melbourne…"

Go to Australia. You have family there who can help you get settled, and if your long-term goal is to emigrate from Singapore, Australia is more generous with visas than the US is.

Thanks for your reply and avidce. You’re the first to answer my questions…
I really really thank you… Anyway, please do note that my aim is to go to US Uni I mentioned above…:(:(

Hi everyone
I just completed my A levels in Pakistan but the results didnt come out the way i expected them to. I was wondering if i could get into a U.s college using my O level results of 7 A*s and 1 A. I would be 18 this April and there is no chance of procuring a place in a US university with my A level grades.
What time is taken to complete college in the US because if i turn 21 games up
And for all of those who just started there A levels please take your studies seriously because A2 is one hell of a difficult class.
P.S i also have an uncle in the states who can afford college for me

Well, I would agree with macmill that after doing ur O-Levels, students should complete their A-Levels and then apply for undergrad abroad.
And yeah, thumbs up to what Imiimmad said above. I have my A-Level final exams in like 3 months and did not take A-Levels as seriously as I should have. But still I am going for 4As :D

@ash555… In Pakistan, my score is not that competitive, not joking btw. Hundreds of kids score straight As (8 As) and this year a Pakistani kid even broke the World Record by scoring 23As and 1B!!! <---- I mean, seriously :O

hi guys um i think its still a little early to ask but still
if i finish my o level in pakistan (my intended result would be 8A’s and 2 B’s) do u think ill be able to go to a good university?

basically theres a small chance that my family may move to USA next year so ill be lyk a residant but i really dont want to stay in high school so do u think i can apply and get to uni with this result?

i just gave the first bit of the exams im gonna appear for the rest in may next year. there are some people i know who went to US frm here on a student visa but were held back a year in uni. (well dat guy did the normal pakistani system of education BISE) so i hope that wont be da case for sumone whose done O LEVELS

as for my ECA’s ive been in the school council for a year n this time (last year of school) in running for presidant…other than that i was the vice captain of the basket ball team for a year n now im entering again for it … we have stuff like parlimentary debates and stuff ill enter for that too this year
ooooh rite there is this thing called MUN (model united nation) ive been part of that too(my teach said its a good merit for collae :p) n ill be doing alot of other sports like batmindon tornaments.

so thats pretty much me there after my long essay do u guys think i stand a chance for a good uni or do i still need to go through A levels ?

All depends on where you want to go. At a fair near New Delhi, India I was told by a representative of Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) that they accept students after they finish their O Levels but recommend you finish your A Levels so that you can get college credit. I believe that comparable universities would have similar policies. However, if you’re looking at Stanford, Harvard, Dartmouth, Brown, Georgetown or other premier schools I’d say you would probably need the extra two years of A Level education.

hello, i am from Bangladesh…
and as you all know, the study quality in here is not up to the mark! there are hardly a very few school which provides in with good education! but they are pretty expensive !
so , for me, i don’t go to any of these expensive school! I’ve been reading on a normal English medium school since 1st grade… I am in std 9 now, and I am planning to give my o levels on the may 2013 sitting followed by the Jan 2014 sitting!
I am a commerce student, and as I’ve hard, commerce subjects are hell tough on o levels!
I am not pretty much confident about my o levels, yet, I’ve targeted to get an A* in at least 6 subjects! out of 8 that I’m giving!
Now, thats not where the trouble is!
I’m not from a very rich family! and i wish to go to USA after my o’levels and pay for my own studies in there! so that i could support my parents! i knw, that i have to join in a school there, and after the graduation, i will get to join an university! I don’t want to wait till my A’Levels because, i am not at all confident about my o’levels! theres a huge possibility that I might score unexpectedly bad in there! so, i don’t want to take up any risk!
My question is, Is there any sort of guarantee that I might get the visa? guarantee as in 80% out of 100% if i score well! ?
and will it be easy enough to join 11th grade in school and then 12 and then go for university?

p.s - I’ve got a HELL LOT of relatives living on the states! Mostly in Oklahama… New Jersey, New York and many more… It might cut up Hostel costs as i might leave with one of them!

hey guys,my name is santa…yeah i know, wierd …lol okay im a 15 year old boy, from Kenya, which is in Africa,im now in form 3(year 10),im in my third term, and i’ll be doing form 4(year11) next year, then i’ll be sitting for my ‘O’ levels, now…im not an A student,im kinda like a D student, and my parents have enrolled me in tutions so as to improve my grades…and im trying my hardest to do so…if i get good grades for my O level exams, i was thinking if it was possoble if i could do my A levels im L.A(tachnicaly,i mean america,im just being specific),and im doing IGCSE at the moment, and i have no idea which curriculum the U.S does sooo i need you guys to help me out here,is it possible if i can do my A levels in america if i get good O level grades???please help coz im dying to study in the U.S(even though im not that good),i would really really appreciate it if you guys help me,thankssss… (btw,i dont come from a rich family,my parents really struggle to earn money,so i want to use my mums money wisely by passing my O levels and A levels and living my dream by studying in america and to make my parents proud… ) thanks once again…please guys…help…
