USABO 2011 Discussion!

I was ENTIRELY lurking in the background and waiting for someone to say that. Thank you. :D

I will be putting the problems online sometime in the next few days, and I’ll link to them once they’re up. I have just manipulated all of you for self-interest while keeping my own morality intact. I feel kinda like House, muhahahaha.

Now, I know I’m a bad person, but isn’t there enough Internet scam in the world today. :P

when testing period is over, can we discuss questions on this page?

The testing period’s extension ended yesterday. It’s fare game now. I thought the test was a lot like the 2004 test, what did you guys think?

nope, some students are still taking it as late as the 28th i believe… no chatting yet ?

that’s ultra unfair. 20 more days of study time…what the ****!

10 days actually. But still very unfair! We can still discuss general info though. How did everyone do? I think I did fairly well. I think the cutoff will be around 27, what about everyone else?

The cutoff should be no lower than the mid-20s. I’m hoping the cutoff isn’t in the 30s though. I made WAY too many idiotic mistakes on that test. WAY too many. Overall, though, the test was pretty straight forward.

Like on which type of problems? Almost 10 of the problems were repeats which helped a lot! I definitely agree that the test was very straight forward!

yea I know some guy thats taking if February 28th. THat’s kinda not fair…hopefully its separate cutoffs for late test takers like they did on NACLO

NACLO? I doubt they do it for USABO!

I only recognized one repeat (this was my first year taking the USABO so I didn’t have many of the previous exams).

I made many idiotic mistakes on the easiest objective questions. They were so easy that I missed them lol. I learned the material many times before but when it came to the exam, I would overthink and choose the wrong answer choice. Haha. I’m pretty sure I got a lot of the hard questions right though lol so hopefully that makes up for it.

Meh, if I don’t make the cutoff this year, I’ll definitely make it next year when I’m a senior and have nothing better to do :D

How u guys prepping for semis?

If I even make semis it’ll be awesome, but I’m not expecting to make semis this year. Maybe next year as a senior I’ll have a better shot. But anyway, Campbell and Raven’s seem to be very excellent books for semis. I know a guy who went to IBO and won a gold medal who read Campbell multiple times (30-40) to help prepare for IBO. So, you could try that, lol.

what do u guys think of the book molecular bio of the cell by alberts? is it helpful for semis?

Was wondering the same thing as Tidal. Also, do we need to memorize equations like Nernst equation or Shannon Diversity Index for semis? Or are we given the equations in the “calculation” problems and need to problem solve from there?

When are we going to receive scores and cutoffs? The CEE site has conflicting portions, with one part saying March 4 and another saying “the week of March 15.”

i think the 4th? based on the “2011 calendar”

Ok so the extension period for the open exam is over. We are allowed to discuss the open exam questions. So what did you guys get for the marathon question where it asked about pulmonary and abdominal pressure.

C

10char

Cartilage recovers slower because it is thicker than the skin is false right?

Yes I put that one was false. And the one about cilia in the intestines was false too.

I hope the cutoff isn’t above 30…gulp
