USABO 2011 Discussion!

Quick question, are there major differences between the AP Edition 7th Campbell and the non AP Edition 7th Campbell book?

nope, except the binding for the AP edition is sturdier, from what i’ve heard.

Thank you, and is memorization of intricate taxonomy necessary?

Is there a significant difference between 4th and 8th edition Campbell? I haven’t taken AP Bio yet (took GT Bio and currently in AP Chem and AP Physics, if that makes a difference) so my teacher only had older copies of Campbell to lend. I found the 8th edition online, and the two table of contents are pretty different…I could use the 8th edition, but I find it more convenient to have an actual textbook in front of me. I just want to know what you experienced USABO people think :)

I’ve heard that there is not that much of a difference between editions that are +/- 2 apart. My advice as other USABO-ers: Campbell for Opens. Possible a biochem book for semis.

ConstanceB, needfortofu27: im not sure about the 4th edition, but i used 6e for open+semis last year, and received my first 8e copy at study camp and did okay. you probably want to use a more current edition for taxonomy at least, as the animal taxonomy at least changed quite a bit from 6th-8th.

samgunno, insorak, iloveyellow: you guys planning on coming back to USABO? i am not looking forward to studying again (maybe RSI or USNCO will take me- haha jokes).

For those looking for tests:

I have ALL the open exams (2003 - 2010), minus the 2005 one.
I ONLY have 2009 + 2010 semifinal.
I also have ALL the IBOs from 2003 - 2009.

I am willing to trade for the 2005 open or any of the other semifinals.

I have a question about the Campbell’s textbook. Would the 5th edition one be too outdated, or would it be OK?

ccer222 would u be willing to share?=) (i don’t have those tests)

LuciferLLied, would you mind emailing me either of those semifinal exams? I can give you the 2009 open.

pm me back if you would like to.

CCer222, PM’ed you

Turns out the 2006 semi-final test I have is only a partial test. If anyone would not mind sending me a copy of the open exams I would appreciate it. I have 2004 and 2006 open exams already. You can find them here: USABO[/url”>http://www.sanjuan.edu/webpages/dkaragianes/resources.cfm?subpage=95524]USABO

Hey guys,

Can anyone give me a glimpse into his or her study habits? I find that just reading through everything like a story book doesn’t allow me to absorb everything, and I know I’ll forget by February. I started taking notes, which may help me reinforce my memory.

How do you recommend reading? I read it once over the summer, and forgot nearly everything, and now I’ve finished again. I plan on studying more, but don’t know how. Should I just reread it again, or should I go through “important” chapters and just focus on those?

What do you guys think?

hey, when you guys are referring to “raven” do you mean “raven’s biology of plants” or just the regular “biology”

^The plants book.

yea um im thinking about USABO
im a sophomore I and I wanna do it in 2012.
so what are the steps I should take to be in a good position?
(classes, college classes, etc)

Any biology class should be fine to “immerse” in biology, although it’s strongly recommended to take AP biology.

Is ravens 6th edition (plant one) different enough from ravens 7th that I should consider the 7th edition? the 7th is a lot more expensive too… but considering the 6th edition was published in like 1999, I feel it might be kind of outdated.

Well, plants haven’t really changed all that much in like the past 20 years, perhaps 1 or 2 chapters might be updated, but most of it should be pretty much the same. A few hundred more dollars for 1-2 updated chapters isn’t worth it in my opinion.

bumpppppppppp
