how many people take this exam?? and how many people can go to the semis?

about 11,000 take it… and it says top 10% make it

but then some people say only 500 make it, so I am not entirely sure

Ok here is what I mean

Question: Blah Blah Blah

Answers:
A. 111
B. 222
C. 333
D. 444
E. 555

Let’s say choices A and B are both correct.

So if someone marks A only, he/she will get 1/2 point?
If someone marks A and B, he/she will get 1 point?
If someone marks A and C, he/she will get 1/2 point for getting A but -1/2 for marking C?

Does anyone know how this works?

No half points, and I think credit is only given to fully correct answers. So like, if you said A, you would get 0. Or even A, B, C you get 0. Only choosing A, B would get points (1) I think.

okay thanks for the clarification

and in response to james,

if it says “all of the above except for ___”

It simply means that you choose the only choice above that is NOT true. But if you think all the choices are true, then choose “all of the above”

hey guys, i was preparing for the usabo open and came across a few quantitative genetics problems. does anyone know how to do those?? i perused through many pages of information online but still couldn’t figure out how to solve those few problems.

in reference to my previous post, i have just started reviewing because our school was granted an extension as to the open exam period (we have a midterm period going on right now, and so basically the school won’t be able to administer the exam until the 22nd). i would suggest that people don’t start posting questions/answers until the 23rd (or even wait an extra week to be safe)

^ ccerr, which ones? Are they the ones from the 2009 open? Could you pm me one of the questions? (If its 2009, tell me which #)

Wait so are there questions with multiple answers? Or are they all single-choice multiple choice?

it was definitely easier than last year’s. last year’s was insane… this year was doable.

Is there a penalty for guessing on the open exam? The website wasn’t really clear. For example, if you get 30 right and 20 wrong, does that give you a 10?

What was the cutoff last year?

And how does this exam compare to the 2009 exam?

Does anyone have the answers to the 2009 test? I have the test but not the answers

Are calculators allowed on the test?

You get a non-programmable calculator.

Oh man this test was insane. I didn’t study at all for this until yesterday (took 2 practice tests) and I don’t expect a great score. I won’t discuss questions because obviously some people haven’t taken this yet - but it was significantly easier (IMO) than the 04 and 06 exams, I felt.

wait, Ktk: are you joking? easier than the 04 and 06 exams?? That is ridiculous… those were very easy compared to 2009 and 2010, which I thought were hard, but not insane…

What are your cutoff predictions then? I can’t imagine them making the test that easy…

I thought that this year’s exam was much harder then previous years except for the 2010 open exam. I think that the cutoff will be about 26/50.

Clarification for Ktk: how was the test “insane” and you felt you “didn’t get a great score”, but you felt it to be significantly easier than the easiest exams? Did you mean to say significantly harder?

^ I used a 4 function calculator… No brand, lolol. Non-graphical, non-programmable. So a Ti-30x would work.

There are many reasons for this

Luck
All open exams have a differentiation of subjects, but in '04 and '06 I found that within these differentiations I didn’t know the facts on it. Contrastingly I found that I knew a lot of the material on the '11 exam, despite them technically being on the same subject.

Familiarity
Obviously, taking two exams the day before would help me become accustomed to the format of the test, how it’ll be like, getting into the groove, etc. - I find this to be very very important before sitting any exam

Studying
I crammed yesterday. I don’t own Campbells, I used [Life: The Science of Biology (6th Ed.)](http://www.amazon.com/Life-Science-Biology-6th-Purves/dp/0716744023) as I am now in IB Biology HL II, not AP biology.

Conclusion: I thought 2011 was easier than 2004 and 2006. I lucked out, I knew everything plant-related on this test, which I couldn’t say for 2004 and 2006. Not to say that there was more emphasis on one section on this test than others before it.

[EDIT] It was insane because I still didn’t know a solid >10 questions on this test because I, well, didn’t study the material
