I was wondering if the USAMO is only available to US citizens, permanent residents, and/ or legal residents. This confusion came after hearing two contradictory things on the MAA website. They said on one page that is limited only to US Citizens and Permanent Residents while on another they said that any student attending US schools could participate. Please answer this question and let me know if you need to see my sources.
USAMO participation is restricted to people attending schools in the US or people with US citizenship living abroad.
Thank you. By the way, do you have any experience with the amc. If so, will there be any calculus concepts on the test or just up until pre-calculus?
@Bradford575 My only experience with AMCs is taking the amc 8 and studying a lot for 10. There’s no calculus on the AMCs but IMO the math on AMCs is a lot harder than calculus. Calculus problems are pretty computation heavy rather than problem solving oriented.
@bawbdmo I am currently studying for the amc 10 and I seem to do the computations exceptionally well. However, when i come across the rigorous problem solving questions, I just can’t seem to solve them. Any advice?
@Bradford575 Buy AoPS volume 1 if you think you can score consistently over a 13 on the AMC 10. If you can’t buy the middle school book along with that and just study the material in both of the books until you find that you have a proficient understanding of the material. Either that or just do a lot of problems and read the solutions thoroughly.
Thanks. Will doing the Aops book and other mathematics books for 2 hours every day be enough to score well on the amc 10. (I’m still new to these tests.)
@Bradford575 I don’t really recommend 2 hours a day. The way I learn math is to do it until I get bored or until I feel burnt out for the day. If you’re going to do more math than you yourself can handle, you’re going to end up burnt out really fast which is bad. Always remember, these competitions are supposed to be fun, not a chore.
Yeah. I think you’re right. I’ve been doing two hours a day for the past few months and I feel really doubtful about my understanding of the concepts I’ve learned so far. I mean I can still solve them pretty well. But there’s just a sense that I’m going too fast and burning myself out. Anyway, thank you for all your help. I really appreciate it.

@Bradford575 Sorry for the late reply but no problem! I nearly got burnt out but then I realized that all of this is for fun and unless you’re in the top 1%, it’s basically a benchmark for your math skills rather than a ticket to IMO.
