@Holocaust Says the guy who bases his username on one of the worst tragedies in the world. Over 6 million Jews lost their lives, and you are ridiculing them by glorifying the event with your username? Really?

My son may have got the problem wrong. He think the rope should be half-U shaped, but it should be straight line shaped.
Assume that it is a massless string connecting a number of point masses. Consider the bottom point mass. It gets 3 forces: gravity mg, wind force going left horizontal F, and tension T1 towards right-up direction with angle (with horizon) a. So mg=T1sina, F=T1cosa. So tan(a)=(mg)/F
No consider the second from bottom point mass. It gets 4 forces: gravity mg, wind force F, downward tension T1 and upward tension T2. The angle with horizon of T1 is a and that of T2 is b.
Vertical: T2sinb = mg+T1sina=2mg
Horizontal: T2cosb = F+T1cosa=2F. So tan(b)=(mg)/F
So, a=b. That means the rope shape is straight.

@ParentOfUtahBoy, unfortunately your sung got it wrong. You are correct.
@Holocaust, I would not be speaking considering the tragedy that you ridicule in your username. Under no circumstances would I TRIVIALIZE the murder of six MILLION humans.

greenbat’s past post history is hilarious, probably ■■■■■
sciencechamp is either very smart and also socially inept, or ■■■■■. probably latter
majorineverythin/gatsbylives are probably dupe accounts made to back up the former two

^I find that these are probable because the level of social ineptitude in the past posts of these usernames goes beyond imagination

inb4 hate :D

@gatsby, Unfortunately, your barbaric posts do nothing. I personally take offense that you associate me with those three users, who are clearly trolls and dupes. Anyways, the fact that you would descend so low as to ruin a novel for everybody BEFORE they read it shows that you are utterly immature, and socially inept.

My god, I am not gatsbylives, I was being sarcastic when I posted “@gatsbylives” and some ■■■■■ must have made another account. I’m not even sure why you suggest that ridiculous proposal, since none of our posts are even remotely similar or demonstrate similar tone.

@gatsbydies You came into this discussion without any knowledge of previous posts, failed to detect basic sarcasm (rofl, remarks at “our social ineptitude”), and seem to be a wanna-be Sherlock Holmes, but you’re not even Nancy Drew level, at best.

Probably more likely that you created gatsbylives on your own.

@Holocaust If civilly responding to people demonstrating an inability to read mixed with condescending tones and clarifying the situation by pointing out their own weakness and misconception is being a ■■■■■■■■■, then buy me low-cut V necks for days bro.

inb4 more nancy drew gatsby

And gatsbydies, seriously though, I’m reading Great Gatsby right now, and though I know Gatsby dies, you run the risk of ruining the ending for people.

@greenbat23 ■■■■ im not a ■■■■■ or dupe

who cares if they are dupes trolls / whatnots this whole argument started over the helicopter problem so lets just see some solutions for it for any kind of answer and respectfully point out errors in each others solutions.

@majorineverythin, civilly is the key word here. You and your partner accounts were not civil. You took the sheep analogy so far that it became painfully unfunny.

And low-cut V necks are perfectly classy.

@Holocaust, I do agree with you that @major is incorrect to be uncivil.

Man, I was just making some “black humor” (another pun, sad that I have to point it out at this point, but seriously) in light of his lack of understanding of sarcasm, even as he focuses on our apparent social ineptitude. @Holocaust If anything, your username is infinitely more of a gross violation of empathy toward victims of the holocaust.
For the last time I don’t have any partner accounts, I don’t know why any of you guys are even hating on ME.
I’ve given by far the most legit responses on this thread with the exception of @ParentofUtahBoy (Well done, by the way. Great solution, probably more rigorous than mine!), and I was in this thread a day or two before him/her when you guys started bashing me for actually contributing.

Seriously, you’re more likely to be gatsbydies than I am any of these “dupes,” you’ve both insisted on bashing me (and basically, only me) while other people are trolling this thread way harder (one guy even posted a damn 9gag link). I even told sciencechamp to not cite making semifinals as an insult. If retaliating against not only incorrect but completely baseless accusations is uncivil, then

@torusdonut I’ve already posted sometime today that the “quadrant 2” answer is only possible if there is a mass attached to the bottom of the rope - think about it. The gravitational force is disproportionately loaded upon the lower section of the rope, relative to their position along the length of the rope.

Edit: Small note, unfunny ≠ uncivil, sorry if that’s not your thing but fallacious logic doesn’t prove me an uncivil ■■■■■■■, an opinion upon which you all evidently persist without any reason. If anything my earnest responses prove the exact opposite.

What exactly happened in this thread? Was there any need to insult others and be condescending for the sake of a single physics problem? I find it especially funny, though, that the person you were all bashing turned out to be right, while you were entirely wrong ~ :P

Why is anyone not interested in any of the other problems ~ ?

apparently the answer to that is yes

@mapletree7
Who was right, and who was wrong? Interested in how an outsider saw this (pretty tragic, honestly) turn of events.

By the way, I’m fully open to discuss any question on the F=ma exam. I can, with confidence, say that I can do every problem on there with a solid explanation/proof.

Last year’s exam questions and solutions were released shortly after the list of semifinalists were announced, so it shouldn’t be more than a week before this is all cleared up. Unless somebody wants to commission a helicopter to carry a cable and fly around in a climate-controlled room and film the results, I think we might have to wait a little longer, haha. (the video I mentioned earlier unfortunately had an object attached to the end, so I’m not sure if the results would be the same)

I asked someone from my school who qualified last year, and he said that our physics teacher would tell us if we made the cut along with our scores, but he didn’t remember exactly when he found out. In any case, I think we should all enjoy our weekends, and congrats to those who already made it!

@gatsbydies I am sick and tired of your attitude. I feel like gatsby herself is a ■■■■■, toying with us for her own personal pleasures. I came to this country to be free and live the American Dream, and you are taking that opportunity away from me. I hope we can resolve our differences in a diplomatic manner in the future, without accusations and insults flying around.

@mapletree7
By the way, here is what exactly happened in this thread (tried to be objective)

Condescending poster states answer is a choice it’s not. Bashes our solution without actually pointing out any errors, claims there is a “fundamental flaw” when there is not. Refuses to actually elaborate on his proposed answer, heavily implies we are all unbelieving fools. @tbradsworth is this person.
- By this point, I’m pretty irritated at how this guy insists his answer is correct, when it’s utterly wrong. He couldn’t even explain or support his answer besides that the apparent AAPT answer supports him. AAPT has been wrong before. They likely are now.

Might I add, some honest posters who were less confident about their answers and wanted a solid proof of a correct answer. I post lengthy, fully legitimate proof, add some sarcasm (sarcastically asked for an “apology,” which obviously he probably won’t give, based on his attitude) in response to his overweening tone.

Random guy @gatsbylives jumps in, claims I have attitude problems (probably didn’t even read the previous posts). I harmlessly retaliate with a few clever words/puns.

@Holocaust jumps in, attempts to ■■■■■ everyone with a 9gag link, claims a few honest followers. Somehow these guys think I actually made multiple accounts just for them. Wow. Regardless I even support them against some of these so called “dupes,” yet they continue to baselessly bash me. Claims I’ve been uncivil, when really, his username is probably among the most inconsiderate on this site.

Pretty much how we got here.

Personal sinking suspicion tbradsworth=gatsbylives=Holocaust based on their posts.

Edit: Sciencechamp seems to be much more diplomatic, civil, and appropriate now.

.

Will the results be out before Sunday night?

Sciencechamp is actually a ■■■■■. Regardless of that, I suppose it’s just a general mess, and seeing as the AMC people (and far more students take the AMC than the F=ma) had typos on their answer keys, then the AAPT definitely can. I suppose your views are fair.

That being said, perhaps we should look for alternate solutions? I personally don’t recall the wording of the question exactly, does anyone know?

@majorineverythin I understand your solution its basically the same as mine, so I’m really calling for @tbradsworth to defend his position.
