Does anyone else ever wonder if USC will still be fully operational in the next few years with predicted water shortages?
No.
@simba9 No, as in, you personally don’t wonder or no, as in nobody else wonders?
Do they have water restrictions on campus for students?
Seems strange that USC would be the only ones having some sort of operational issues due to a water shortage since the entire state of California is in a drought…
What??? No worries about it, no water restrictions. But everything in California is seen (and reported on) as much more dramatic by those outside of it than those of us that live here.
Both. There’s always some concern statewide about saving water, but nobody’s in a panic about it. I’ve never heard anyone speculate universities would be operationally constrained because a water shortage. Farmers and ski resorts are the businesses that are hurting because of the drought.
@binky17 @simba9 It’s raining right now!
If water were to be an issue, it would affect greenspace, perhaps. But the Cali water issue is not near affecting urban drinking water and there are not restrictions on campus for student water use.
The forests are being clobbered by beetles, however, due to tree weakness caused by drought, or so I’ve been told.
They often turn off some of the fountains around campus and I’m never really sure if it’s for maintenance reasons or simply because they’re trying to conserve water. My Spanish professor at USC hypothesized what would happen if the city ran out of water (her class was so environmentally conscious in its subject matter), so to me it seems like it’s on the mind of some at least.
@binky17 Just saw this and it made me think of this thread. (one of California’s problems is we don’t have enough water runoff containment.)
@dumbblonde13 oh, I was thinking about USC in particular only because my son has applied there. For the record, my son and husband (who is from CA) just laugh at my catastrophizing. Naturally I would love for all of California to be immune to drought conditions and consequences, but it’s true, I do worry. But my son is also thinking of attending school in Boston, which may be under water in 10 years (see catastrophizing, above).
Thanks @CaliDad2020 !
That article is a reminder of the great potential of human innovation… gives me some hope.
@binky17 this is way off-topic, but one thing folks don’t realize is that CA’s problem is as much water storage as anything. One big concern is we are poisoning our rather large aquifers.
CA tends to get a decent amount of rain - averaged out between wet and dry years - but CA always counted on snowpack to “store” it. Warmer weather means smaller snowpack means we need other ways to store (and to refill the many underground natural aquifers.)
@CaliDad2020 Super interesting video thanks for posting. University Village is gorgeous, what an addition!
@cadreamin It is pretty amazing (although some of my “older” friends who are SC grads are sad about the little neighborhood shops that were there “back in the day.”) My D is a freshman this year so she’s “dreaming” of getting into the village. Hoping to be the first one in her room next year!
