^ It’s hard to beat having JPL

Don’t go there but I do research there

Exactly. That is the point. USC is tired of hearing people call them the University of Spoiled Children.
They want respect… specifically, academic respect.

UCLA has nothing over them now.

And Cal (UCBerkeley) is only 1 (ONE) point higher than USC now. OUCH. That has to sting.

It would sting if anyone in there right mind actually thought that USC has the same kind of academic prestige that Berkeley has.

I guess College Confidential has to add USC to its list of CC Top Universities as long as UCLA is on it.

there has to be something we students can do to up our schools rankings…any suggestions? do one of us need to make 45 billion dollars and donate 2 billion to UCLA? would that friggin help?

The obvious way students could help would be study harder. Also, I think $2 billion to any school would “friggin help”

"I guess College Confidential has to add USC to its list of CC Top Universities as long as UCLA is on it. "

I agree with this post.

Does anyone know where both schools rank when it comes to engineering after this update?

I don’t go to either, but the general consencus with me and my fellow east coast private schoolers is that UCLA>USC. The only reason they outranked UCLA this year was because of the fiasco that is happening in CA, but once that is all fixed and UCLA is no longer in limbo, financially speaking, it will once again regain a higher ranking. USC is a fantastic school, as well, but it is perceived that UCLA kids are smarter. No offense, that is what me and others from the East Coast think.

don’t worry, that’s how it is here for EVERYONE except for the kids rejected at cal/ucla but accepted to USC trying to compensate for/justify their rejections

Yeah, I have to say, I’m from the East Coast, and I think the perception there is still that UCLA is better than USC… including among guidance counselors. When I tell people back home that I’m going to USC, I almost always have to follow it up with, “no really, it’s actually a really good school now.” It’s kind of remarkable the difference in reactions when I tell people where I’m going next year on the west coast as opposed to the east coast.

I didn’t apply to UCLA, because I could tell from visiting the campus that it wasn’t really the right fit for me, but I can tell you for sure that I didn’t get into USC because of superscoring–I only took each of my standardized tests once.

I’m amused by the quotes saying that USC students buy their grades. One of the threads that keeps popping up on the front page of the USC forum (it’s currently on the second page, but oh well) is one with numerous students bemoaning how hard it is to get an A in some of the core classes. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/972408-true-its-nearly-impossible-get-writ140.html

I’m also going to repeat a pretty common sentiment–regardless of what any individual thinks of the US News rankings, they are pretty influential to many prospective applicants. I personally didn’t even know USC’s ranking until well after I’d applied, but the magazine did help me discover other schools to which I applied.

Moral of the story is…who cares about the rankings? I mean, they’re fun for bragging rights and all that. Would any of you really change your mind about where to go just because the rankings changed? We chose UCLA because it was right for us, and they chose USC because it was right for them…

or because they didn’t get into UCLA ;)

^ Of course, some choose UCLA because they didn’t get into Cal ;)

I got into Cal…

but sure, some have that reason.

Then why go to the branch campus?

I got into Cal, USC, Brown and chose UCLA.

bmanbs: Because it was a better fit. I liked the city, campus, student body, school spirit, etc. better

You’re crazy if you think UCLA is full of Berkeley rejects. Berkeley’s only very slightly more difficult to get into. Most students I’ve asked were accepted into both.

UCLA and Cal, because of admit floors can’t take them generally, except for a few athletes here and there.
^What did you mean by this? What are the admit floors?

Anyway, I agree with the poster who said that USC has been cultivating its reputation for the past few years, whereas UCLA is trying to take more of a holistic approach, getting hurt by budget cuts, and maintaining its status as essentially a state university.

I love UCLA and would love to see it rise in the rankings again, when the budget crisis is over, but the after effects might create long-lasting damage that’ll take years to clean up.

Generally, if you’re accepted into USC you should be able to get into UCLA. IDk why some of you people say that USC has a lot of UCLA rejects.

**no one is listening!!

Welcome to cc, where people care about ridiculous ranking systems. **
