USC Class of 2022

@laffytaffany No. The two (Merit decisions & FA awards) are on different paths. The Office of Financial Aid operates in a vacuum of sorts. Clearly, if you gain a Merit Scholarship from USC or anyone it will lower your demonstrated need and thus could affect your financial aid award thereafter… but none of that, including whether your financial aid file is complete or not by late Jan, will have any impact on whether you gain a merit scholarship.

http://prntscr.com/hu0lm8 Just a question, once I have to submit mid year grades, should I also include my sport? Or just the academic subjects? At my school sports are a part of your schedule as a class.

@WWWard Thank you so much! It was confusing me for a while haha.

@laffytaffany you’re welcome

@jj1999 If it is a scheduled class with grades that are incorporated into your GPA, then I would include it. If not… I would not.

@WWWard It’s not factored into our academic GPA so I won’t include it then.d

My D submitted the common app and supplement on 29th and USC download the same on 30th Nov so i guess we were well within the merit scholarship timeline, once we had the portal it says the results will be out by April… so not sure… she is an international applicant… is that the case for every one?

@UmaSridhar Yes… Only 800-1200 or so of the 55K+ applying will learn their fate early… by late Jan / early Feb… when they are moved forward in the merit scholarship process. Everyone else (so roughly 98% of all applicants) will not know if they are admitted or not until late March.

Good Luck

Merit scholarship recipients (only about 800-1000) of the 25,000+ that apply by Dec 1 find out late January. The rest 55,000+ or so, which includes those early applicants that didn’t get merit and others that applied after Dec 1st, find out around March 23rd. They always use April 1st as the “find out by” date, but it has been around March 20th for last several years.

Do we think that 800-1200 includes NMSF or not?

I’m so nervous! I applied into IYA. I was wondering if anybody knew whether we could be notified of admission into the university (not the program, just USC in general) and be notified if we are a finalist? Because IYA takes the top 60-70 or so and invites them to an interview, but is it possible to know if I am being considered for a scholarship and therefore admitted into USC by late Jan?

@collegegal223 If you are notified in late Jan that you are moving forward in the merit scholarship process, that also equates to being admitted at least to USC simultaneously.

I would also recommend to anyone considering USC to take a few minutes to view this excellent video about USC and its L.A. location…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eERe0-E4Zpg

Also to consider… current feel like temperatures: L.A.: 71, NYC: 5, Chicago: -5

Do NMSF folks get notified in January?

@kevbostic This link will take you to a PDF that breaks down all USC Merit Scholarships… and their details related to application / notification dates, etc.:

https://admission.usc.edu/docs/Scholarships.pdf

@WWWard not gonna lie, Berkeley has been my top choice for a while (besides stanford. rip) but the idea of constant summer in LA is really persuasive…

@kevbostic No, they do not get notified in January because NMF status is not know at the time they are processing and putting out merit results. A student can get in with a Presidential which is the same as NMF (1/2 tuition), then find out later they are NMF, but they cancel each other out and do not stack. A Presidential recipient may get invited to interview at the chance of it getting bumped up. Also in January, a student that gets admitted with no mention of scholarship in packet is getting the Deans which is a 1/4 tuition. If later that Dean’s recipient finds out they are NMF, they get their merit bumped up to a 1/2. Ya, a bit confusing, but that’s the highlights re NMF.

@Booajo There was a discussion of that there from some earlier USC mastermind parents and cc helpers to USC and the consensus was they are definitely included in that number. The question was if they were part of the Presidential figures. Someone on here did the math back then to come up with that answer. However, they use to post Presidential figure at around 350, now it it 200, so they may have formally split NMF out from Presidential for their counting purposes. They don’t say exactly how many NMFs but it is safe to assume NMF is in that total of 800-1000 or so scholarships. Hard to figure specifically how many NMF because an NMF may also get one of the other scholarships -making NMF not so significant for them.

@CADREAMIN , are you saying that

  1. a student will be notified in January if he gets any scholarship, and
  2. anyone who’s not notified in January will get nothing from the school?

@18college1111 All three are excellent options. Good luck.

I am confused. I applied by Dec 1 as a NMSF. I understand that the National Merit 1/2 tuition scholarships are not released mid-January like the other scholarships … but when will I receive it? When I get my decision April 1? But NMF Corporation says I have until April 31 to officially list my “top choice school”… so do I not find out until then?

The whole timeline isn’t clear to me at all. Clearly I need to know the cost of attendance before I commit, but when will I find this out?
