@CAapplicant Feeling that! My daughter’s stats put her in the top 25% of all admitted USC students. Additionally she has extensive service, leadership, work, is a 3 season varsity athlete with state recognition individually and as part of a team, numerous honors, doubled up on math/ science classes for 3 years, college science credits under her belt…and on and on… denied. A cousin of ours (similar credentials) decided last minute to toss an application at USC (no intention of attending) just to see what would happen, and got in! There’s just no rhyme or reason and it’s definitely difficult when you see admitted students post their stats which are no where near the credentials of your child.
Good stuff in lengthy email just sent out just a couple excerpts…
We will be fully operational Fall 2020 and Spring 2021, offering our full roster of courses and degrees, as we have been and will be doing this summer. We also will be welcoming our incoming classes. We are exploring a range of scenarios, with significant public health provisions, that will allow us to offer our courses in person, while also ensuring most, if not all classes will be available, in parallel, online.
The first phase in re-opening campus activities over the summer includes establishing strict physical distancing protocols for a ramp-up of on-campus research and clinical education. Longer term, we are planning for a full return to campus operations when it is safe to do so, including all academic programs, athletics, and large-scale gatherings. Most importantly, our commitment to providing an exceptional education, in and out of the classroom, is unchanged…
We know that you are anxious for answers and we are asking our Project Restart groups to work quickly. We hope to announce much of what our Fall 2020 semester will look like in June.
Great update! There was an article in Business Insider regarding how Univ of Arizona intends to test all 60,000 students with the antibody test. I wonder if USC will do the same.
@JoonBee2002 That’s fantastic. I wouldn’t be surprised if USC has this planned, they had testing available when all this first started (and there were not tests to be found) for students and staff that remained on campus. Things will likely be very different in 3 months, yet over the next 4 years. I can say, USC takes care of it’s own - they let students stay on campus that couldn’t get/go home, they had that testing available super early, and their communication through this has been amazing to current student famlies. I am confident it will be one of the best places to be as we ride this thing out to a vaccine.
UCSD is doing something similar

@CADREAMIN Okay this may be a dumb question but what do you think are the odds of Spring admits moving to the fall? Since so many colleges have movement on their waitlists and while spring admit isn’t a “waitlist” it is for the fall in a sense. I saw on the appeal page that it seemed like people got in for both fall and spring and I’ve always heard everyone say that for the most part, spring admits get priority for movement to the fall (whether this is true or not idk).
So I’m looking to apply to USC next year and wanted to know if they distribute the scholarships evenly for the different colleges(ex. marshall, viterbi, etc…). For example, my intended major is part of the Keck School of Medicine. I was wondering if I have a better chance of applying through Keck or Dornsife. Does the Keck School of Medicine even give out scholarships or are they reserved to the bigger academic distributions? Has anybody gotten a scholarship and applied to Keck School of Medicine?
This is for our USC gurus @CADREAMIN or @WWWard or anyone else that has had a student at McCarthy. When I attended college in the late 80’s we had a community bathroom on our half of the floor and we didn’t have to maintain it (thank goodness). But in the suite set-ups in McCarthy whether the bathroom ratios are 4 to 2 or even 8 to 2 do you know who takes care of maintaining the bathrooms clean? Do we need to prepare with daughter for bathroom cleaning supplies and scrubbing duties or do they have a service? And if so how often?
@BlessedinFL when my daughter lived in McCarthy, someone came in twice a week to clean. I’m not sure how thorough they cleaned so not a bad idea to have her start at home now. She’ll be responsible for all cleaning sophomore year and beyond.
@emmm16 Sorry long answer ahead, thinking and writing…This is just a gut feeling, and I could be totally off, but I really don’t see spring moving to fall or if so, very few. First, that is always their goal. Each year their intention is not to move springs to fall. Over several years, zero moved. The scandal a year ago created this idea/online legend that tons get moved (that was the only year that kind of movement happened) and tons of appeals get in. (While an increase in accepted appeals last year, it was about 30 or so more, not a hundred(s), like people think). And it caused an increase in appeal applications but they went back to the 30-40 accepted (still big for them 10-20 the goal/norm). Last year was an anomoly, they want to signal that by getting back to normal figures, but then this virus thing, ha.
They admitted 2,000 more students for fall and I don’t think this virus thing scared off that many. Of course there are those that have financial impact, but again of those to USC, I don’t think it is big #s. We read online news stories (and all their drama crud) reporting that some college kids are changing their plans…Frankly, even the number they mention is very small overall, and I don’t think that applies to the USC population. Most that planned on USC know this virus is a temp thing and they aren’t gonna give up 4 years at their desired college (USC or others). So that extra 2000 is a lot of yield padding.
Then the study abroad students aren’t going. While not all abroad students have on campus housing, some do (cause they planned it that way so not stuck continuing to pay an outside of campus 12 month lease while gone). These housing spots are needed by them and transfers this fall (who my guess are also going to have less housing this year).
Then you have this whole social distancing thing…can 4 people be still legally be crammed in that teeny tiny tuna can loft option in the Village this year? Who knows? But they may have less housing spaces overall due to modifications that need to be made.
I could be totally wrong! That’s my gut from being around for awhile, but I haven’t asked my birdies anything about figures. I think they are busy enough trying to define the fall semester and I want to leave them to that! But when they reach out to me, I will pass on what I learn. It’s always best to plan on not getting bumped, then if you or others do, it is an amazing surprise! btw, you are able to decline the bump if you want to stay spring.
@BlessedinFL For all the suites on campus they have someone clean the bathrooms - some may be just once a week though (I seem to remember or unless it’s changed). For the boys in a 6-8 person suite, I can say the cleaning didn’t make much difference. I witnessed it. ick.
With Target right there, she can easily pick up the Clorox Clean-up spray!
@Newmommy9999 Our D is also considering a deferral. She’s expressed a desire for the fully immersive freshman experience.
What is your kid considering doing during a gap year?
I was shocked to see that the UC system already decided to have a completely virtual / online learning fall semester. Here’s hoping that USC waits and chooses to do otherwise.
Cal State University (CSU) system, rather than UC system, but agree.
@WWWard Not a surprise for CSU’s where many of the CSU campuses have a high percentage of commuter and non-traditional students. Cal Poly is exception, not the norm, as a CSU campus for example. But in a public system what applies to one applies to all. It’s a shame cause CP SLO is like an island - low exposure there overall, they would be in good shape to open in fall one would think. There are almost 500k students in the CSU system - wowza.
Gotcha. That will teach me to get my news updates initially from ESPN. They have since updated/corrected the story… but originally they were making statements about the PAC-12 Cali schools all being remote, which implied the UC schools versus CSU schools. I will be curious to see what the UCs decide.
The spring bumps are complete, very few moved, just a few majors that had spot(s). So back to normal after last year’s larger wave of bumps due to the scandal. Indicates a decent fall yield and/or a housing challenge, we shall see!
^^^ Very interesting. While disappointing for many Spring admits, it does suggest, as stated, a yield rate result that must have matched their projections fairly well. I look forward to the published #s later within the freshman profile.
Here is a link to the USC virtual graduation ceremony… occuring currently:
Here’s hoping that the in-person ceremony process returns soon and that the class of 2020 gets an in-person do-over.
Fight On!
The band part is really cool!
