I'm in the same position as some of the other threads, I just came back from USC and Clemson and loved USC's campus and feel. However, Clemson is obviously better academically and on top of that, they are building a new biology/science facility that I will be able to use sophomore year. To me, Clemson seemed close-minded and had a lack of diversity. I'm also slightly concerned that both times I visited USC there was a lack of student life and pride on campus, but maybe we just visited at weird times. What can you tell me about the diversity, pride, programs or really anything about these two schools?

For some reason there’s this stigma attached to Clemson (USC people especially like to tag this on us) that we are redneck, white, racist farmers but that’s definitely not true at all. People here at Clemson are not closed-minded at all. Diversity is a problem but as an asian on campus, it has not personally bothered me. I think Clemson is 84% white while USC is 78% so the gap is not huge between the two schools. The issues with diversity in South Carolina I feel is due to a problem with the K-12 education system in SC but I won’t rant about that.

I won’t say anything about USC since I am not a student there but school spirit is contagious at Clemson. We have Solid Orange Fridays where everybody wheres orange. People are excited for football, basketball and baseball games (our stadium is actually on campus compared to USC whose football stadium is a mile south on Assembly Street)

Here are some of the traditions at Clemson: [Traditions : Clemson University](Traditions | Clemson University, South Carolina)

Feel free to follow up with any other questions!

I think that a lot of the diversity issue is because SC has some historically black colleges which tend to attract many of our black students. Anyhow, the nation is 72% white, so 78%-84% white is fairly close to the national norm.

I’m in the same boat that you are! Although, sorry pierre, I think I might choose USC. It’s a lot cheaper and I got more scholarship money. I visited Clemson and felt the same way that you do. Columbia is definitely a wayyy more diverse city. Richland County is 50%/50% white/minority and has a good mix of political parties that people belong to political parties. (richland county is one of the more diverse sections of the state and one of the few counties where democrats win most elections. I am an independent, however.) As for the stigma, most Clemson people are not redneck or racist. A lot of my best friends are going to Clemson, and I plan on visiting them every time USC plays Clemson in football basketball and baseball. Clemson only got that reputation because of Pitchfork Ben Tillman wayyy back when it was started. He was our most racist governor, but really Clemson is a good school and the people there are friendly.
The people who go to Clemson and get into everything love it. Like they NEVER want to leave. Some of my friends that used to be USC fans got caught by the Clemson spirit and bleed orange and purple now. The same will happen for USC too; it’s just more extreme at Clemson.
Good luck deciding
