USC for Civil

Hello,

Just want to ask for your opinion on CivE undergrad at USC. My little brother wants to go there, but the cost is really expensive, and I don't see any USC graduate being better than Cal Poly Pomona graduate.

My sister and I went to cal poly for our bs in CivE. I even went as far as choosing csu long beach for my ms in structural over usc b/c of the cost. I honestly thought that USC is a waste of money, especially seing how their graduates make about the same as we do, and learn the same stuff we did.

So my question: is it worth it? Is it thaatt worth it?

Many thanks in advance...

I go to USC for CivE. USC is different in that the Cal Polys are more hands on while USC is more theoretical. The passing rate for the EIT for USC CivE students is well over 90%, I don't know what it is for Cal Poly.

Also, I have a feeling that going to college at USC is an entirely different experience than Cal Poly. DivIA sports, the Trojan network/family, etc.

If you have any questions feel free to message me and I'll do the best I can to help.

Short Answer: USC is only worth it if he gets good aid for undergrad.

Depends on the cost. If he wants to work straight from undergrad then it wouldn't matter so long as he passes the EIT. If he's interested in PhD programs then I would highly recommend USC. Also he could go to Poly, do well and then get his master's at USC (I've heard they have a stellar graduate program).

Thank you all for you inputs. I really appreciate it, especially since I don't know much about USC.

I had a chance of checking out their curriculum and course description, and they're not that much different than Cal Poly. I don't know why he insists on going there.

Honestly, seing how USC tuition is 30k+ per year for undergrad, I would rather have him study business at USC, if cal poly and SC CivE are compareable.

Maybe it's not related to academics. As 2+2=5 said, the experiences at the two colleges are probably very different.
