Hi We, the parents of an international freshman, are visiting LA to drop our kid at USC. We are looking to stay somewhere safe but accessible easily by public transport from USC, for a couple of weeks. USC Hotel is quite expensive for a long stay of over two weeks. While we are trying via Expedia and Airbnb, we are unfamiliar with LA. Can anyone suggest any suitable areas or hotels/apartments ?
What would you like to see/do during your two weeks in Los Angeles? Are you able to rent a car rather than having to rely on public transportation? Are you planning on arriving before your student moves in or after? He/she will have plenty of activities planned the first couple of weeks of school so you may not be traveling to campus as much as you think. Other than move in day, convocation (Aug 19 at 9 am) is an event that many parents attend. Some (but not all) departments have parent receptions the evening before convocation but those have not been announced yet.
Here is a map of the Metro Rail in LA. You can see that there are a couple of lines that drop off close to USC. Some hotels offer shuttles to Metro stations. If not, Uber and Lyft are options. My personal choice would be to stay in the South Bay (ex. El Segundo, Redondo Beach, Torrance) but those cities are farther away from some of the typical tourist attractions in Los Angeles.
Thanks. No, we won’t have a car and we don’t drive in US. We will look at tha areas you suggested. Ease of access to USC is most important as we can figure out the sight seeing even if takes more time. Given the pandemic situation, we don’t expect to dp much sight seeing anyway.
I second the advice to work off of the metro map. Culver City would be particularly convenient, as it is right on the E (expo) Line, as is USC. Also, it a nice area with a thriving commercial district (restaurants, etc.) Not too many inexpensive hotels, but there are some affordable airbnbs. Further west of Culver City along the same line would be convenient too, but may be more expensive.
thank you
