USC Marshall --- Fit For What I Want In Life???

I’ve always been interested in the entertainment, media, music, and fashion industries, and I’m really interested in doing business in that area while creating at the same time. However, my parents and counselor say that UMich Ross and NYU Stern are much more prestigious than Marshall is, but my research has been showing me that Marshall is fantastic for business in entertainment areas. Also, I’m also interested in a high salary while having a job in the passions that I have at the same time, but my parents keep telling that it’s not possible unless I’m lucky like the celebrities are. They also said that Americans won’t like me because I’m Asian (Vietnamese) so it’ll be harder for me to break into the industry even more.

What do I tell my parents???

If you want to do Wall Street or consulting work, then Ross or Stern would be better. Prestige matters for those kinds of jobs. OTOH, for what you say you want to do, it’s tough to beat USC. USC always makes a big deal about its connections to the entertainment (which includes music) and media industries. I don’t know about fashion.

First I would contact USC and see if they have a program similar to what you’re interested in, or if there’s a way to cobble together a program that would suit you.

I kinda’ agree with your parents that it’s not easy getting a high-paying job in the entertainment industry. There’s a lot of competition for jobs, so unless you do something to really distinguish yourself, it’s unlikely employers are going to feel the need to pay you a high salary.

Do research on the Business in Cinematic Arts program at USC; it’s ideal.

Each of the three universities you mention (USC, NYU, UMich) have excellent business schools and strong ties to media/entertainment. Each could provide the opportunities you want; the rest depends on you.

However, each of these three business schools (Marshall, Stern, Ross pre-admit) are extremely coveted and difficult admits. Your best strategy would be to apply to all three and expect none - include some safeties on your list.
