USC National Merit Finalist Half Tuition Scholarship

I am a little confused here. Is the USC Presidential Scholarship for NMF independent of the NMSC $2,500 scholarship? What if my daughter lists USC as her top choice by March 1. Is she in the running for the NMSC $2,500 or will the USC Presidential Scholarship override that? If she gets the $2,500 from NMSC, will she also additionally get the USC Presidential Scholarship, or does the USC Presidential Scholarship replace the $2,500? If my daughter lists USC as her choice by March 1, and later gets the $2,500, can she change her mind and change colleges & take the $2,500 to a new school, or is the $2,500 bound to USC since she chose USC by March 1? You can tell I’m really confused. In addition, it sounds like it’s better to NOT get the $2,500 if you’re going to USC, if USC is going to turn around and give you an additional $4,000 instead.

THIS. The $2500 from NMC is good anywhere, but USC will not give the $1000 a year NMF stipend if you already have the lump sum $2500 award from NMC. That’s why some do decline the $2500 award. On the other hand, it’s money in your pocket now that she keeps even if she were to leave USC. The $2500 NMC award does not have any effect on the half tuition Presidential Scholarship. As far as changing her mind after March 1, I would call NMC and ask. They are very nice about answering that type of question.

There is no benefit for your daughter listing USC as her first choice by March 1. NMSC will send out notifications and update portals regarding the $2500 scholarship on or about March 25. She can wait until after she gets that notification to designate USC, or some other college of her preference, as her first choice. Stay on top of deadlines imposed by the other schools to which she has applied, however. For example, on the NM thread for class of 2021, a poster just indicated that NEU has a deadline of April 1 for first choice designation.

eta: I second the recommendation of @vistajay that you contact NMSC directly if you have any questions. They are so helpful and patient.

There may or may not be a benefit for listing USC as 1st choice by March 1. We were thinking that when USC sees the 1st list and sees my daughter has picked it as her 1st choice, that may help her get admitted into USC. Or not.

I did call NMSC and they said you could change schools anytime before May 1, because college sponsored scholars don’t get announced until after May. That being said, I guess some colleges won’t look at the last NMF list (May 1) to decide who to award their scholarships, hence they give an earlier date (the date before the NMF list they will use to decide who to give the scholarship to). That seems a little weird though. For example, if you list BU as your #1 school on Mar 1, and they get the 1st list and choose students from it. But then you change your school to say NEU by Apr 1, so NEU now sees your name and consider it for their scholarship. Now you’d be on 2 different colleges’ scholarship consideration lists because they’re looking at different NMF list pushes. Don’t know if BU ever checks that they got switched out!

They also said it doesn’t matter which college you list #1 (for college sponsored scholarships) because college sponsored scholarships don’t come into play until after NMSC announces the corporate & the NMSC $2,500 winners. Only if you don’t get one of those does the college scholarship come into play. NMSC does not award more than 1 scholarship, so if they gave you the $2,500 one, they won’t offer you a college one. You wouldn’t decline the $2,500 one because NMSC says it’s higher than the college sponsored scholarships (between $500-$2000).

I would add this - NMSC is being a little naive (rather than intentionally fictitious) with their advice. I have experience with ASU- the “NMSC” portion of the scholarship is $250/semester. BUT, ASU then guarantees 100% tuition for 4 years on top of that, roughly $34,000 per year. Would you take a one time $2500 payment over $34k per year? You can only accept one. Every school does it a little differently, but for most that offer big $$ to NMF, I think it is structured in a similar way (Alabama, UCF, UTD)

FYI - I am a bit jaded by NMSC. I really appreciate the financial support from ASU. Most of it comes from them, not NMSC. NMF sounds like a ‘big deal’ that can help a student get admitted to higher profile schools. Nope. I finally realized it is just a high level scholarship that most selective schools do not participate in. Even at USC, its only 1/2 tuition and that award is competitive, not guaranteed. Schools with big NMSC $$ are trying to attract higher level academic students to bolster their stats. Florida is a special case because of the state sponsored program, so my “swipe” does not necessarily apply to them.

I don’t know about ASU, but this is not how it works for UTD. S20 received $2,500 NMSC, but he also received what is almost a full ride scholarship from UTD.

There are 2 options
1 time $2,500 from NMCS + UTD tuition + $4-5.5K per semester (depends if student lives on or off campus)
or
$3,000 spread across 8 semester coming from UTD + UTD tuition + $4-5.5K per semester

One does get a little bit more money from UTD than NMSC, but we are talking about $500 over 4 years.

I believe most of the universities handle the situation the same way like UTD.

Hey @usma87, my DD is a freshman NHRP at Barrett at ASU. Where do you get the $34,000 figure from? We are getting OOS tuition which is only $28,800 or so. Add in the $500/year from NMSC and I still don’t get to $34K. Asking because maybe we are missing something.

And I agree with your premise. I would still pass up $30K (50%) at USC for a full tuition ride at ASU. That’s $120K your student can use for grad school, or something else (like both a car and down payment on a home).

When I add up the various aid numbers, the total, per semester, is $16,804 (20-21 school year). I had a slightly higher number on one of my budget sheets. This is still $33,608 per year.

Breakdown for one semester is:
NAMU National Merit $16,364
NMSC $250
Assured aid $190

My DS is a junior, NMF from out of state (CA).

Sorry, @usma87 , but I still don’t follow. This is what I get for NAMU, which is $28,800 OOS. (We are OOS CA too). Where is $32,728 coming from per year?

I sent you a message @sbdad12

I sincerely doubt USC admits NMFs just because they’ve designated USC as first choice early. They have tons of NMFs who apply, so I don’t think they could be bothered reviewing the first choice lists to see who they want to admit. They are more concerned with the contents of the applications. My daughter was admitted last year without designating them as first choice. Also, as my one additional anecdote, I know of a Trustee Scholar who did not designate USC early. So maybe there’s a benefit to not designating early?

I think playing the game of switching between colleges with early dates could bite someone who doesn’t stay on the ball about it. I don’t know of when they award their large scholarships (do they come with admission or later?) I personally would not want my child to risk a scholarship by playing around like that.

USC’s NM Presidential is independent of NMSC $2500

I believe (but am not 100% positive) that she should be able to receive both the Presidential and the NMSC $2500.

The $2500 is not bound to the school that is listed as your first choice at the time the scholarship is awarded. NMSC will ask you to finalize what school you will attend.

Yes, $4000 is better than $2500 but you if you are awarded the $2500 you can’t turn in down in order to get the $4000.

Old post but this simply is wrong. 15000 out of 16000 NMSF become Finalists. Half of NMSF that apply to USC are accepted. I believe that Eeyore123 is spot on with everything he says.

Eyeore123 wasn’t able to find the source for his/her stats. Do you have a source that states, or even approximates, that 50% of NMF that apply to USC are accepted?

I have twin NMFs who applied to USC, one of whom was granted a NMSC corporate scholarship in March 2022. It is a bit confusing, but here is the scoop, per a call I had with NMSC: NMF may be granted one and only one scholarship via NMSC and their partners: a corporate scholarship for any amount they wish to offer, OR a scholarship from NMSC which is $1K/yr for 4 yrs, OR a college partner scholarship which is $500-$2K/yr for 4 yrs. The NMF is given a max of 1 NMSC partner offer and if they decline it there will be no more. For USC, NMF are given $1K/yr for 4 yrs as their NMSC partner scholarship if USC is designated as target college by 5/1. The remaining $$ for presidential half tuition is from USC itself, separate from NMSC entirely. If the NMF accepts a corporate or NMSC direct award, they still meet eligibility requirements for USC Presidential half tuition and it would be paid by USC, separate from NMSC. So, my daughter was able to accept a NMSC partner corporate award for $5K, which is her “one award” from a NMSC partner and still be in the running for USC NM Presidential which would be paid by USC. She confirmed this with USC financial aid. Note she does not know if she was accepted to USC because those decisions aren’t out yet. She has not designated a target school with NMSC and will not until late April prior to the 5/1 deadline. Hope this helps.

Congratulations to your twins!

There are three options for NMS scholarships: NMSC, corporate and college partner. In USC’s case, the college partner scholarship has been $4K ($1K/yr). I am not sure if it is the same amount this year.

Did NMSC change their scholarship to $4K? According to their website it is still $2500.

Also, USC does not require one to designate them as first choice until May 31. A student will need to SIR (commit to attending) one school before May 1 so, if you know where you are going, it doesn’t hurt to tell them early. Scholarship Grid by USC Enrollment Services - Issuu

Yes you are correct on three NMSC scholarships for NMFs. And yes, the NMSC scholarship is $1K/yr for 4 yrs. per a live convo I had with NMSC rep last month, although I see that their website still says $2500. Perhaps it hasn’t been updated or perhaps she misspoke, thinking of USC’s award instead? Haven’t dug into that since I don’t really care lol, small difference. I was told the Univ partner amounts vary between $500-$2000/yr for 4 yrs. , with USC at $1K/yr for 4 yrs. The corporate scholarships vary from one time awards of various amounts to annual awards. And yes, I understand the decision date for USC w/NMSC is May 31 but most kids will select a college by May 1, thus my comment of specifying the school by late April. It is actually a complicated process that has taken some parent time to dig into, leaving the test performance to my kids.

And thank you! We’re very proud of them. And even though they may not make use of a free ride NMF scholarship, the process has opened up doors and nice accolades.

So if my son was already admitted to USC (and is NMF), will that 4K be automatically given to him in addition to whatever merit scholarship he is awarded? Is that stackable?

If he doesn’t receive the NMSC scholarship (which has traditionally been $2500) and he doesn’t receive a corporate scholarship then he should automatically receive the $4k from USC. It is split into $500/semester for four years. This is added on top of the Presidential or Trustee scholarship.
