USC National Merit Finalist Half Tuition Scholarship

What school are you talking about?

Rose Hulman. They offer a 2K for 4 years if you choose them by May 1. My son was going to see U of Alabama next week just to see, since they are so generous with NMF. Today we learned that he got the $2500 scholar award. His college is still listed as undecided. When I called in February, NMF told that he canā€™t get more than one college offer so to be clear which one he wanted before submitting.

Call NMSC tomorrow and ask them. Have you asked others on the Rose Hulman board?

I just now realized that I was on the USC board. I will ask on the RH board, but it is a very small community. I will call NMSC tomorrow, but this is very confusing and stressful.

I think my son had a school listed, but it is not one of the sponsoring schools. I think it can be changed until the award is actually accepted. However, changing it to a sponsor school probably wouldnā€™t make any difference in the award type or amount at this point.

so if one is accepted to USC its both half USC tuition and $4000 on top of the half tuition. Is it half tuition per year?

Yes, half tuition per year.

If NMF and accepted, it is at least a Presidential (half-tuition) scholarship. The Presidential scholarship is for 8 semesters (up to 18 units/semester). If a student wants to take more than 18 units, they can apply for exceptional funding.

If a NMF student did not receive a $2500 NMS scholarship from NMSC and did not receive a corporate scholarship designating the student as a NMS, USC should add the $4K ($500/semester) scholarship on top of the Presidential scholarship.

Again, Iā€™m stating how things were done in the past. Dollar values may change this year.

My son is in class 2025. He received half tuition automatically, but itā€™s not the case for the $4k scholarship. It took us many rounds of requests to have the $500 per semester added under the name of ā€œUniversity Scholarshipā€. Itā€™s a very frustrating process dragged for over two months. I thought itā€™s quite a straightforward process as they enroll hundreds of NMF students every year. Anyway, keep checking the financial add statement. Good luck!

Ugh! Good to know.

Mine is 2024 and it is listed as National Merit Scholarship.

I just received a surprising rejection from USC. I have a 4.9 gpa, 36 ACT, quite a few extra-curriculars, and a sibling in USC ā€˜24 (who was less qualified than me). Iā€™m not bitter, I swear, just trying to give facts. Iā€™m a national merit finalist and put this on my application. Is there any chance that this (and the 1/2 tuition scholarship USC would have had to pay me) could have hurt my application?

Iā€™m sorry.

It is unlikely that the NM scholarship was a factor. They donā€™t pay you anything, they just collect less money from you.

Did you get into other schools?

Yes, fortunately Iā€™m into honors at UVA, Georgia Tech, St. Andrews, Edinburgh, and have scholarships at Case Western and Glasgow. Still, Iā€™d really been hoping to go to school with my sister and expressed that USC was my top choice. I guess some things arenā€™t ment to be.

So sorry for you but you have amazing acceptances. You will shine.

Is your student still listed as ā€œundecidedā€? If so, when they change, can you share the timeline for when FAST is updated?

USC is supposed to be need-blind. So it shouldnā€™t have been a factor.
If they were only need-aware, it would be more of a concern. But the only people that really know for sure are the ones working there.

It all depends on what they are looking for. My daughter was rejected with much higher stats than my best friendā€™s son in Florida whom was just accepted for theater
I am thrilled for them
Great kid

It also very much depends on major and college. Marshall and Viterbi are looking at different qualities than Thornton and SCA.

Hi all, I have twins admitted to USC fall 2022, one in Dornsife, one in Marshall, both NMFs. Both have submitted housing apps to USC to hold their places and in their 5 allotted request spots included a couple in McCarthy in the Village. Since that is reserved for scholarship students, but my kids havenā€™t yet specified USC as their university pick with national merit corp to get USCā€™s Presidential award, will they be eligible for housing in McCarthy? If they name USC by 5/1 with NMSC, is McCarthy housing as a Presidential awardee still on the table? We are visiting campus soon, but thought iā€™d check here first to see if anyone has insight.

I asked those questions at the recent regional USC event. Their answers were ā€œyes.ā€
