What do you think is a better college to major in film/ TV production?
I LOVE Los Angeles, and I’d prefer living there over New York, but I have a family legacy at NYU. I’m interested in making super blockbuster type movies as well as documentaries on food/travel/culture. I also don’t really care that NYU doesn’t have a 'campus ’ What do you think is an overall better choice? (also considering work experience you have exposure to, fee structure, acceptance rate, etc.)
It is extremely difficult to gain admittance to Tisch and USC film. You would be very fortunate to gain admittance to either let alone both. It is highly unlikely that legacy will help you at NYU these days, especially Tisch which will evaluate you on your talent/portfolio. I would suspect that USC film would be the same. I do know that legacy has always been hughe at USC but maybe less so now.
And by the way NYU does have a campus as it has grounds and buildings. It is a truly urban University. USC though urban is located in South Central LA…LA is more like surburban sprawl…and less densley populated.
My best friend from USC, undergrad and law, has a son at NYU film school because his kid got rejected from USC SCA. Legacy got him no where. But my friend said the cost of NYU is over $60,000 per year and he gets zero financial aid. Ouch.
By legacy, I mean 5 people within close family; I’ve been told they really consider it but I’m not banking on that too much. I want to get in on my own merit. Do you think its virtually impossible and not worth applying? Because these two are my dream schools and it would really hurt not getting into any of them, especially USC.
And yes, I do know about the NYU campus People just tend to have problems with it because it “doesn’t have the campus feel” but that never bothered me one bit.
Ronnie, at this point (you’re a HS junior, right?) you should plan to apply to both schools, both are wonderful. Both are extreme reaches for most everyone. At USC, they admit 2-5% and NYU may be similar. You should take care preparing your application supplements and creative samples. Take the time to make these amazing. Also (more important!) spend some time looking at more realistic schools with great film programs. Your original question is sorta the filmie version of: Yale or Harvard? Like, both great. But let’s get real. Do your research and apply to reach, match and some safe schools, too. And pay attention to costs. Both NYU and USC have sticker prices around $65,000 and that tends to go up each year. So if you think you’ll get great financial aid, or hope to get a big merit scholarship, please realize this has led a to a lot of angst and suffering for many talented students. You need a great film program at a school you can get admitted to, with a pricetag your family is comfortable with. It’s not a good idea to take on huge debt–especially not in this field.
I hope that you are admitted to your first choice college. However, if you aren’t all is not lost. USC rejected Steven Spielberg twice according to Wikipedia. He attended Cal State Long Beach. I guess USC is not always the best judge of potential talent.
