Anyone have any idea how successful the premed applicants are at getting into medical school? It doesn’t seem like most UC medical schools take many USC students according to their class profiles .
@soccerfutbol At our private high school at an open house, a prospective parent looked at a chart on the screen and asked the principal why there weren’t that many accepted to a UC. Her answer was that very few from the school applied to UCs. Private kids tend to go private. Not sure if the same, but my guess is that overall, not that many USC students would apply to UC medical schools, so statsitically, the same is represented in the class profile. I know the two younger docs in our extended family did not after attending USC, but that doesn’t mean a whole lot, just a for example.
Three of the UC med schools are top 15 in the country, so they don’t take many students from any school. Those med schools are nationally-ranked and accept nothing but tippy top students.
That’s a weak answer, and just spin. UCSF has been a top ~5 med school for decades, and I’d bet few from USC would turn it down if given the opportunity to attend. Now sure, if a school like Vandy med came up with some merit money, that could be attractive… OTOH, USC has a lot of students from outside of CA, where med admissions can be easier. For example, a resident of Texas who attends USC would be foolish not to apply to his/her instate med schools. They are somewhat cheaper and less competitive than a UC. But they are not ‘private’.
Thanks for the replies. I am trying to decide between pre-med at USC, UCLA, Long Beach State or UCI or UCSD and have to decide by tomorrow.
Good luck those are some fantastic choices! Congrats!
