Just had my interview! It was very laid back, but if you have one, do prepare. Lasted about 40 minutes, but that was because the last 20 minutes were my questions and his answers. Don’t worry, you will all do amazing!
What professor interviewed you?
My daughter’s interview was not at all what she expected. She was offered 30 minute time slots that weren’t compatible with the time difference (would have been 2:30am her time). When she responded, the prof said she didn’t know she lived on the other side of the world, which, to me, means she hadn’t read her application. My daughter also doesn’t have long distance calling on her phone so they had to Skype, but only my daughter was on camera, not the professor. At the beginning of the interview, the prof read a disclaimer (which she also read at the end of the interview) and said that the interview would be 10 minutes long. This affected her answers because she felt she didn’t have time enough to give a relaxed and full response. She said there were no questions that related to her work or her qualifications or her interest in USC or production or her application. They were styled like questions asked in a beauty pageant…questions you could ask any applicant as a litmus test. When it came time for D to ask a question at the end, she was well aware that they were over the ten allotted minutes, so she only asked a simple one. Total interview was 18 minutes. It is terrible that the interview was such a stark contrast to the interest other schools showed D during their interviews and gave her a chance to shine. No one wants to be treated like an inconvenience. Is this a sign that professors don’t have time for students at SCA?
I live in Asia and my daughter in Europe, so I didn’t witness the interview. There is a chance that my D did make a good impression, but she said she was unusually nervous, due to USC being her top choice and the unusual format.
I really think the interviewer was trying to stick to the disclaimer of ‘no special treatment’ but it resulted in no individualized or personal treatment.
@filmmomvt I really appreciate you for sharing this much needed info!
That’s very interesting to hear @filmmomvt thank you for sharing. Could I ask where in Europe your daughter is studying as I am also an international student from Europe
It seems like each faculty member takes their own approach to the phone interviews. Just had mine yesterday; it lasted a little more than 10 minutes and was very casual. She didn’t ask me any really intense questions - felt more like she was trying to get to know me as a person than like a formal film interview, which was nice. Most of the time we were just talking back and forth and genuinely conversing, and I think my one tip for people who have theirs coming up is to be relaxed and yourself.
Question-- is the SCA scholarship application required? Do many people receive the scholarships?
@ocean2000 She is in Prague attending a year long program. She has her IB Diploma from an international school in Asia, but she is American.
@jhlaurens Did you think that the prof really got to know anything additional about you in ten minutes? Did she read the disclaimer at the beginning?
@filmmomvt No, she didn’t read the disclaimer. Even though it was just ten minutes, I think she was able to get a sense of my interests and personality.
@filmmomvt What address is on your Ds common app? One in Asia, Europe or U.S.? It is true she may not have had the essays and only the bare bones in front of her. Some interviewers are just looking to find out a certain aspect of the applicant, but hers does sound like an outlier experience.
When do they typically send out acceptance packages?
Around March 20-22nd.
Does anyone know when USC Admitted Students day? Still waiting on notification and of course not assuming acceptance as this is my sons reach school. Just trying to work on a preliminary schedule because we are from PA.
Explore USC dates are April 9, 11, 16, 18, 23.
Hey everyone! I know that no one is really posting here all that much but I wish everyone the best of luck when the packages get sent! If it’s meant to be it’ll be!!
This is the eye of the hurricane. Everyone is trying to keep busy and distracted. There’s no more questions, nothing else can be done, it’s just time to wait. It’ll get busy again here soon.
@CAdreamin To quote from an amazing Tom Petty song most of our kids have never heard of “Waiting is the hardest part” - here is the link children, enjoy, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMyCa35_mOg
Haha loved that @CaptainRonnie and you’re correct. I’m imagining the “dad you’re old” faces if I played that video for my kids.
Now the waiting, but soon “the future is wide open”
I don’t know if I’m overstepping by asking this question, but does anyone know if USC SCA sees female applicants and applicants of colour of greater value and therefore have a greater chance of getting accepted. I only ask because over the past few months I’ve repeatedly seen the dean of SCA make emphasis on women and people of colour in the industry
@ocean2000 I think they see applicants of movie stars as greater value.
