USC Thornton Composition - Questions about the program?

I’m looking into USC’s BM Composition course. I was wondering if any alums are around and could shed some light on what the program is like / what a typical day is / kinds of opportunities you have / etc.

My main concern is how classically-oriented the course will be. I understand that it is under the “classical” department, but many of the songs I compose have contemporary elements. I create these three-dimensional sonic landscapes through synths or electronics, all backed up by an orchestra. My work is really 55% orchestral, 45% electronic. In the composition program, how much freedom will I have with this? Will I be locked in to compose only for a certain set of orchestral instruments, or can I venture into contemporary elements?

Secondly - I aspire to be a film composer. I understand that the BM in composition is a perfect gateway to the Master’s film scoring certificate, but how much composing for film (if any) do you get to do as an undergrad? Furthermore, is the BM in Composition definitely the best USC undergrad major if one’s interested in film scoring?

Third - Are you required to participate in music ensembles? I am a composer, and not at all a performer, so if this is a requirement, I don’t know what I’ll do.

Thank you so much for your responses. Feel free to ramble; anything you can say about the program, I’d love to hear.

My suggestion is to call the school and ask for a representative who could answer your questions as well as wait for any Thornton alumni who might visit here.

You might also inquire about the Popular Music major. Some composers are included in those selected for that group.
