USC Village - Residence Halls

Does anyone know the plans for USC Village in terms of placing residents there when it opens in the fall of 2017? That will be my D’s senior year at USC, so we were curious if the class of 2018 will be getting the first shot at living there or whether the village is instead designed to primarily house freshmen and sophomores. Has this info been posted anywhere thus far?

USC-owned housing is primarily for freshmen and sophomores. A very limited number of spots in certain buildings are held for upperclassmen, but usually they want to find their own housing, since it’s usually cheaper or better. Don’t count on being able to get in.

@Hawkwings Thanks. I knew that was the current policy or reality. I just did not know how many new spaces that the USC Village was designed to accommodate there in terms of residents or whether a policy has been planned for it yet or not. My D has thus far lived in Webb and Century and will be living in Century again next year. I guess that she can always just make it three yrs in a row at Century if no newer or better options emerge…

The Village is a huge project. I’d guess there will be at least some space for upperclassmen there. The good news is in general there will be more upperclass space in housing, so it should be easier for Juniors and Seniors to get housing very close to campus. Still, I’d suggest calling the Housing office to inquire.

@trojanchick99 I did email USC Housing. If they confirm one way or the other, I will leave a message here. Thanks…

The Village will allow them to guarantee housing for 3 years (official statement from SC), but there should be space left for some seniors as well.

@Lilliana330 Thank you. USC Housing has still not replied… but I like your answer.

I just got back from spending the weekend at USC, I cannot tell you how impressive the USC Village is to see in person. Wow, it is gorgeous and much bigger in scale than I thought when the first cranes went up. When you see inside or between the buildings as you pass, you see what a community this is going to be. Really beautiful.

@CADREAMIN I can imagine. I toured the periphery of it back in August, and it looked like it had the makings of something pretty spectacular even then. It is good to see that $700M+ well spent

So my S has attended SMU for his freshman year this year, and will be transferring to USC starting Fall 2016. At SMU, he has lived in beautiful new and impressive residential commons (at a glance the USC Village looks similar). SMU’s residential commons are basically a residential hall format…so I was wondering if anyone is aware if the USC Village will be strictly a residential hall (dorm) format, or will they have single rooms and apartments available since it is including upperclassmen?

@Shorty90604 USC Village is not set to open until Fall 2017. I can only assume that it will be offering a mix of room/apartment types at that time… but I do not believe that they have actually published the floor plans or descriptions yet.

For housing options next school year, he will need to refer to the current array of USC Housing options. More details can be found at:

http://housing.usc.edu/index.php/buildings/century/

… where there are 16 undergraduate apartment options to evaluate.

Good luck…

@WWWard Thank you for the information. I have been looking at the housing site for some time now and drove by the five apartments S2 selected before the USC FB Spring game this past Saturday. Looking at them online and such just leaves me feeling like I need more details.

@Shorty90604 Admitted student event is this Sunday at USC. There will be opportunities to see all housing on this day. Maybe that will be helpful.

@nubble16 Thank you. S2 is in Dallas in school right now until 5/10, so he will not be able to attend Admitted Students Day this Sunday. Do you know if we can see the apartment interiors on Sunday and get more information and a better feel for each? (My husband and I have already seen the apartments from the outside driving around.)

Also, if S2 cannot attend Admitted Students Day, would it be appropriate for parents to attend alone? What all do they cover? Thank you in advance for any information.

I would call admissions and ask. I don’t see why not, but they do have a registration process I believe and you get a name tag when you check in…not sure if transfers get access to register for that, but they could certainly tell you. If not, and since you are local, I would probably just show up and walk around.

It is my understanding one of the Village residences has been planned for honor students.

We were at Explore USC on Monday. It was mentioned that one residence will be for incoming freshman (2021) honor/scholar students, another for sophomore (2020) honor/scholars. Not sure how many residences there will be but the rest should be for rising sophomores I think.
