Which one is more reputable overall as a school?
I'm looking to go into Business, and according to BusinessWeek, Berkeley is #11 while USC is #17.
But then again, USC is willing to meet 100% of FA needed.

So which one would you go to if you were accepted to both, and why?

Berkeley. As a matter of fact, Berkeley is in a notch above USC. Meaning, they’re not even in the same league when it comes to prestige.

Berkeley-Haas. Not only it has a solid name in the West Coast, it has a solid, well-established name nationally and internationally. It would open more doors for you and you’ll have access to some of the best and biggest financial firms that only recruit at elite schools like HYPSM and Haas.

It’s really what you want to make of it. Personally, as an OOS student, I like USC because it’s more “state-diverse”, in LA, and has the Trojan family. Marshall is quite a good school, I believe, although that’s not what attracts me to the school (film is more like it!)

Since you are in-state, Cal MIGHT be the better choice. Prestige-wise, definitely. Cal has a pretty strong national and international reputation, while USC is probably a notch lower. I still think both schools are great so you can’t go wrong with either.

Berkeley is a better school academically. But USC has a better variety of people (read: not just nerds) and would probably be a better experience.

University of Southern California would be the pick, I mean UC-Berkely is a good school, but USC your getting full if not most FA met, and it’s also a great school… and as a out of state student it’s a good environment.

I don’t think USC has a more diverse student body than Berkeley has. If you’ll go to Berkeley, you’ll see that the people there have different skin colors, come from different backgrounds and speak different languages apart from English. It’s a melting pot of people from all over the world, and some three or four thousand OOS students.

“USC is willing to meet 100% of financial need” is very different from USC will be free! 100% financial need might mean a $10,000 break in tuition… or $20,000 break. In both cases Berkeley, at $25,000 all in including a 2 person to a room dorm, travel, book, insurance, etc. compared to USC at $52,000 - $10k or $20k…

As to which school has a better academic rep – that’s not even open to discussion. Rep is based on across-the-board Ph.D. faculty strength, and in that, Berkely is ranked in the top 3-4 in the world, along with stanford, harvard, and cambridge.

As to USC’s academic reputation, I believe it somewhere in the 30-40 range… different by a factor of 10 compared to Berkeley.

It’s definitely worth going to Berkeley (in-state tuition) because it’s a generally superior school to USC. Berkeley is a very well respected university, not only nationally, but even more so internationally. And, the business school of Berkeley, which is Haas, is generally a top 8 business school in the whole America whilst USC’s isn’t known in most part of the country.

I don’t know…I’m pretty sure all the Californian students at USC didn’t all fail to apply to Berkeley or all fail to gain admission. I don’t think the differences are as great as some are purporting on the undergraduate level, and especially if you wish to work in California-USC’s alumni network is extremely strong. The decision is not so cut and dry.

Never said USC would be that lousy… just thought Berkeley-Haas is better. Even when we compare the salaries of their graduates, Berkeley grads make more than USC grads do. So, no matter how strong the USC alumni network in LA is, it does not have any bearing to this case as Berkeley alumni are just as strong as USCs or even better.

While Berkeley is a better school, it probably isn’t that much better to warrant it over USC (for that reason alone.) Just go check out both schools and pick whichever you like more.

My daughter was accepted into both USC and Berkeley. After visiting both (and she was originally a staunch fan of Berkeley and always envisioned going there) she chose USC without hesitation. Opportunities to double major or double minor and actually explore multiple options, smaller classes, state of the art facilities, no money problems (like all the UC’s are experiencing), the Trojan network. As a busines major you could minor in theater or micro-biology or architecture or whatever…their motto is “make a life…not just a living”. Their financial aid is great – its costing vastely less for her to attend USC – Berkeley would have cost more by several thousands of dollars and she was even offered a $3,500 scholarship by Berkeley. I strongly suggest you vist USC and see what they have to offer…but also visit Berkeley too. It’s a great school but I just think that USC is better overall. Also, the diversity at USC means you have 40 to 50% students from across the country – not just California kids.
