USC vs. UMich vs. UIUC - Engineering

@Hawkings: Say no more. USC it is.

Congrats and best of luck at SC. :-)

@rjkofnovi: Thanks a lot

hello epitomofidoicy…even i had a problem like this…i jus git the rejection from umich and so have decided to go to usc…
maybe we can meet up if u also go there

Prestige: USC=UMich>UIUC
Strength of Engineering School: UIUC>UMich>USC
Location: USC>UMich>UIUC
Social Life: USC>UMich>UIUC
Job Placement: UIUC (especially if you plan on going into engineering/computer science)>USC>UMich

Vimanasrayam, you just dredged up a three-year old thread, but don’t let us stop you from finding the topic interesting. ;)

Sorry to dredge up this thread again but… I’m having this dilemma too! I’m trying to pick between USC, UIUC, and CMU. Did OP have any regrets about the choice to attend USC?

I think there are a lot of inaccuracies here.

 1. Prestige. According to whom? If we are talking about high school kids, then I would agree that Michigan = USC > UIUC.

If we are talking about academe, as overall academic institutions, I would say Michigan > UIUC = USC.

If we are talking about corporate America, outside of their respective regions (Midwest in the case of Michigan and UIUC) and West Coast in the case of USC), then it would be Michigan > UIUC = USC.

And if you are talking within engineering circles, it would have to be Michigan = UIUC > USC

 1. Strength of Engineering schools. In what field exactly? Overall Engineering: Michigan = UIUC > USC (UIUC was ranked #5, Michigan #6 and USC #27) Electrical Engineering: Michigan = UIUC > USC (UIUC ranked #5, Michigan ranked #6, USC unranked) Civil Engineering: UIUC > Michigan > USC (UIUC ranked #2, Michigan #8, USC unranked)
 2. Location. This is highly subjective. To those who love large cities and warm weather, it would be USC > Michigan > UIUC. To those who prefer college towns and change of seasons, Michigan > UIUC > USC
 3. Social Life. Wasn't UIUC ranked the #1 party school in America? Anyway, I would say for on campus social life, Michigan = UIUC = USC. All three schools are awesome as far as I am concerned, but again, this is highly subjective.
 4. Job placement. Where? In SoCal, it would be USC >> Michigan = UIUC. In Chicago, it would be Michigan = UIUC >> USC. In the Northeast, including NYC, Michigan >> UIUC = USC. In Silicon Valley, I would say Michigan = UIUC = USC.

Hope this helps.
