I don't know whether I should choose USC or WashU.
I visited both schools, and I loved them both...
I am majoring in engineering.

Please help me!
Thanks! :)

I know someone at WUSTL majoring in aerospace engineering, and he seems to love it there. On the other hand, Viterbi is tied with Caltech at 7th in the nation’s engineering schools.

Hmm…better weather in LA? lol. I guess it comes down to where you could really see yourself at for the next 4 years. I had to choose between SC and somewhere else I really liked too, but that’s the question I asked myself that did it for me.

Sorry, I probably didn’t help much but of course we’d love to see you at SC!

Panda,
Were the financial packages equal? This should be a strong consideration. You do not want to graduate with a huge debt.

As far as engineering is concerned WUSL is not ranked in the top ten in undergraduate engineering and not in the top 27 in graduate engineering. I checked the specialty rankings and there is not one specialty where WUSL is mentioned.

Another plus for SC is the huge number of majors if you decide to change interests.

Pluses for WUSL are higher ranked university and even smaller class size.

i think it depends on what engineering you want to do :)

The financial packages are still pending… I haven’t received my USC package yet, and my WashU package is probably going to be readjusted. I worry about the money, but my mom just wants me to go where she thinks I’ll be the happiest.

I know that WUSTL is not as highly ranked in engineering, but I visited it, and it seemed like the program was pretty good, and they just got new facilities!

I think I want a school that is a little bit smaller than USC. WashU has 6000-7000 undergraduates, whereas USC has 16,000-17,000.

Thank you everyone for your opinion! :)

if you’re going into viterbi, you’ll get the small school experience.

Thanks. Any more opinions?

Panda:
Your major is a big factor in your choice. Consulting the engineering school profiles of the American Society of Engineering Education may be of help: [ASEE.org - American Society for Engineering Education](http://www.asee.org). You will be able to see for each school the departments, their accreditation, the number of students/graduates in each field, the faculty, the research areas, and so on. Another consideration involves the opportunities to participate in clubs or teams associated with your major; these can be an avenue to networking with potential internship sponsors and, down the line, potential employers (teams tend to have industry sponsors). And, sometimes engineering students are counseled to go to school in a region where they think they may want to seek employment; this comes from the idea that internships and potential employers may cluster around that region (maybe a moot idea if you’ll be going on to grad school elsewhere). The balance between hands-on and theory in the program is another consideration; there are definitely differences among programs in the emphasis.

However, the main consideration is where you feel you will be most comfortable to optimally live the life you want to live as a college student. Trust your gut on this one. Best wishes!
