USCGA vs. civilian college

My S has received an appointment to the USCGA for the fall but is having great difficulty deciding if this is the right fit for him. He has visited the academy so he is familiar with what is expected of him. Here's my question to any parent/cadet. It seems to me that their lives are so regimented that there is little or no time for fun or to relax. I'm also concerned that his experience won't be a "college experience". I'm trying to gather as much insight so I can be of help to him in making this decision, if he asks. thanks...

As a 4/c he’ll have a regimented life. Especially during swab summer.

However, to say that he won’t be able to find time to relax or have fun is stretching it a bit.

Once the academic year begins in August, he’ll have plenty of exposure to a “college experience” except everyone will be dressed alike and there no campus Delta House keggers on Friday night.

I’d say if you son has serious doubts, it’s not for him. However, if you’re just the normal concerned Mom, please take comfort in knowing that all parents have doubts about college choices, and once the child is away parents still have worries.

Their lives are very regimented their first year at the Academy, and swab summer will be like no other experience in his life. However, my son, and the vast majority of other cadets have formed some lifetime friends, and enjoy the challenge and their successes together.
