Hi all,
I wrote a column in a local newspaper last year and I want to use parts of it in a college essay. Is this okay?
Thanks!

You may wish to quote yourself if it was published to avoid having someone run it through SafeAssign or some similar program and have a high plagiarism number appear. I am not sure if admissions does this or not but it’s probably not worth the risk to not acknowledge it was previously published.
If you have other option, you don’t want to use a previously published, even it was written by yourself.
I’m not an Admissions Officer, but I would find it disconcerting to read an essay where the author extensively quotes his/herself. I would just write a new essay. You could certainly reference the article in your application.
I see nothing wrong with re-using a portion of your own work, and I agree with @cantiger’s advice to note that you’re quoting your own previously published work. Good luck!
