The person we know who went to Hartt played out in jazz clubs in the Hartford area and made lots of connections in the Connecticut / New York area while he was at Hartt.
I suppose it’s possible that they’ve changed the rules, but we did ask for more from Hartt and were successful. This was 5 years ago. My son graduated last year. We couched it as we have this other offer that’s too good to turn down, but Hartt is where he really wants to be. What, if anything can you do to make finances less of an issue? We dealt with the financial aid office. They had an appeal process we had to follow.
When S emailed to decline his spot at Hartt on the basis of cost, he was asked what it would take to cover the gap between it and his second choice. They did offer more, but not enough to cover. They seem like an awesome group of people. I’d give it a shot; worst they can do is say no.

My son told me today he has chosen Hartt. The last I had heard he was going to go with the better offer at USM. It seemed like a no brainer because he is a very practical young man. I shared all of your experiences and advice with him, so I’m hoping that helped. He asked for my advice, and I told him Hartt based upon a lot of your comments, but also because I told him I didn’t think he would get that kind of offer as a transfer student, and if he really wanted to end up at SUNY Purchase he would have much better credentials from Hartt then USM.
I did advise him to call the school as well as the drum instructor. (Eric McPherson) I read his bio and other things and was impressed, plus he has a kind and caring face
I was a musician in my youth, and miss it greatly, so I live vicariously through my two musician sons. One is a working singer/sax player professional in Orlando, and of course the tremendously gifted drummer with a very bright future.
Thanks again for the advice, more to come.
Congratulations on the decision! Now relax and enjoy!
Awesome! It seems like everyone that goes to Hartt loves it. I’m really pleased for him!
Good news! I am smiling! Now you can do what we did and travel to the college for all the concerts! Our youngest is in grad school and we still love attending his orchestra concerts.
Congrats! I hope he loves it!
