In the Permit to Report package, I got a letter from USNAAA. It says that 99% of midshipman join. Why? It seems really expensive with not very many benefits. Are any of you guys joining?

all of the service academies have very tight knit alumni assciations, and the alumni always help out their own. Don't make the mistake of not joining

You definitely should join. It will never be cheaper as it is now as a new Midshipman and there are lots of benefits!

join. everyone does

For sure join.

The thing about the alumni assoc thing is my parents can't afford to pay for it for me, I have 5 ap exams to pay for, class dues, and as much of the 2200 as I can before taking the academy loan- 540 bucks is not that much more than 50 a month in the academy? Maybe I can save up a little more money by then or my parents might be able to help.

How much do you guys have to pay to join? As I recall, the "dues" were automatically deducted from our paychecks and you had to do something outrageous, like petition the CNO, in order to disenroll yourself. What gives?

DeepThroat

Dues are automaticly taken from your check last during the last 3 years at the academy.

Nope you don't have to do anything special to not join, just say you don't want to. It costs $180 each year, for your first three years.

$180 in what we used to call "funny money." Your monthly cash pay (i.e.--what actually finds its way into your pocket) isn't reduced, correct?

Assuming that is the case, you shouldn't worry about. Actually, regardless of how it works, you need to just join and not worry about it.
