which is the best Zumdahl edition?
I have the 9th.
Why does it matter? You should study for USNCO because you’re passionate about chemistry, not because it looks good on college apps. The best edition of Zumdahl is any one, since it’s more about the knowledge that you gain (which has not changed in 20 years!!!) rather than finding the easiest way to IChO.
@ahsu01 You can’t make IChO if you don’t have a passion for chemistry.
@RoSoccer101 He never said anything about that. Please don’t start anything accusatory on this thread.
No. Like I was agreeing with what he was saying. I wasn’t accusing anyone of anything.
@RoSoccer101 Ah, sorry. I misunderstood. I apologize again.
Got my Carey’s! Yay!
Yay have fun reading it it’s a nice book
Which edition do you have? I have the sixth edition and found it to be a little too wordy at times. I’ve heard that the ninth edition is pretty good though.
@RoSoccer101 I got the ninth edition. It’s the international version, so it’s the same, but paperback and cheaper.
BAD NEWS EVERYONE! USNCO CAMP AND USA PARTICIPATION IN ICHO HAS BEEN CANCELLED THIS YEAR :(((
I am writing to inform you of some changes related to the participation of the U.S. at the 48th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in 2016. Next year’s competition will be held in Karachi, Pakistan. Due to security concerns for U.S. citizens traveling to Pakistan, the ACS is adopting the recommendation of the U.S. Department of State warning U.S. citizens against all non-essential travel to Pakistan.
Regarding the 2016 competition, the USNCO Subcommittee has decided to conduct the local and national exams as usual in order to motivate students to learn Chemistry and recognize high-level academic work. Medal recognition will be awarded based on students’ national exam scores. The study camp will not be held in 2016.
For those wondering what my source is, there’s the email from ACS to my local chair.
I can confirm the validity of this. It is truly disappointing that the IChO decided to choose a potentially unsafe location for the tournament.
@DigitalKing well, IChO was originally supposed to be held in Kazan, Russia this year. But according to my IChO friend, who forwarded me that email, they backed out, and a last minute decision was made during the competition this year.
@basedchem My own research found that the IChO committee was in a tight situation. For a while, they had no venue (Australia looked like they might be able to host). Then Kazan was proposed, but withdrawn. Having no venue for IChO 2016, the committee was scared that IChO 2016 might not happen. On the morning of the Closing Ceremony, they were approached with an offer from Pakistan, so they accepted.
I guess having an IChO for like half the countries (New Zealand has also announced their withdrawal) is better than not having one at all.
That’s very disappointing…not that I was going to make the team, but nevertheless sad to hear. At least they are still conducting the local and national exams :).
Hey Everybody,
I was wondering about this whole permanent resident v citizen thing. According to CCer’s, p.r can only take the local section test and not move on to nationals, so they can’t even be called finalists. But according to the official website,
permanent residents can achieve finalist rankings and take the national test. Would someone please clarify? Thanks in advance.
P.S. I’m just going to start to study and am wondering if I got a shot at honors.
@dncn888 I think my friend last year was PR, and she couldn’t go onto to nats. Ask your local coordinator for clarification.
basedchem,
Thanks for the quick reply! I did ask my coordinator and she said that she did not know of any restrictions on p.r., but it was the consensus on cc that p.r. can’t participate in nationals that made me wonder.
Not that I’m doing this just for college, but if i do qualify for the national exam in my region, can I put that I was a USNCO finalist on common app?
