Hi, i’m new here, it would be really helpful if anyone could help me about a question i’ve been asking myself. UT Austin and Cal Poly are the two colleges I really want to get into but I don’t think I have good enough stats. As a junior, I have a 3.4 GPA, 1410 SAT score (first try, imma try again), I am the president of two clubs, and have a decent amount of volunteering hours. I have taken 4 AP courses so far and plan to take 6 in my senior year (including 3 one semester courses). Unfortunately, I’m not in any sport teams.
Can anyone please tell me whether my goals are realistic or if I should aim lower (if so, plz give example?)
I want to major in Computer Science. Thank you for any insight.
the GPA is weighted*
the clubs are (ping pong and badminton, and ik they may not look like serious clubs, but both are fairly popular)
I cant speak for Cal Poly, but I’m also trying for UT this fall. I have a 1450 and a 33, and I’m wondering the same thing. But I just went on a college visit there and they said that the average sat is 1370 and act is 29, so get way above those to be safe. Also, they place a TON of emphasis on class rank, so try to be at the very worst in the top quarter of your class. Be aware that comp sci is a hard field and is pretty competitive though, so it may be tough for you to get in. I would put you at around 50/50, but if you bring your sat up you’ll have a better shot.
I don’t think you’ll get into CP Slo’s comp sci. I’m not sure about UT though
Well, the reason i have a bad gpa and class rank (mid second quartile) is because I moved to the US in my freshman year and since the study pattern was very different, it screwed me over :(. I will definitely get a higher SAT score, hopefully around 1480 by the time i turn in my app. Because I moved, I’m not THAT extra-curricularly involved either. But then again, I don’t believe they look at the difficulties one faced during their HS experience lol, so I would be sorry if I banked on my excuse. Thank you so much for your insight
I had that feeling thanks for your insight
UT you will be fine no $$$$, but will you get in I believe you will. Now you just need 30k/yr to pay for it.
Possibly UT if you can get your SAT up higher. 3.4 Weighted GPA is incredibly low for UT.
Computer Science is also an incredibly competitive major, which makes admission harder.
Thanks for believing i can pay too
I know right…my 3.4 gpa is scaring me a lot…that’'s why i’m hoping around a 1480 will do the magic, thanks for your insight
Don’t worry about your low GPA. UT Austin cares more for the SAT/ACT score and class rank than your GPA.
To see a scale of 1 to 5 on how important each section to admissions for UT Austin is:

Class ranking - 5
Extracurricular Activities - 3
