I thought I would share my experience auditioning for UT today, since I don’t often see the school on the forum. I auditioned for the BFA Acting program, so please note this is what this will be about
So I got there pretty early, and hung out a while in the theatre building until checking in. There were running a bit behind because there was another theatre event going on at the same time- forcing them to change rooms a couple of times. There were a ton of people there and I was super freaked at first, but it turned out mostly everyone was there for the other event. During my time slot I’d say there were maybe about 10-15 students there, but I went pretty late in the day. There were current student milling about, answering questions and stuff like that. Overall the pre-audition vibe was pretty good, a little nerve wracking but overall I’d say there wasn’t any intentional stress placed on the people audition and the students tried to put everyone at ease.
When my name was called I went to a smaller holding are for about 10 minutes, and talked with one of the BA students who had nothing but nice things to say about her UT experience so far. This is my first live college audition so I was pretty nervous, but I felt pretty good after talking with the current students and some of the people auditioning. The room you go into looked to be a movement room, and a chair was provided for students. There were maybe 4-5 people in the room, including someone recording the auditions (which threw me off, as I’ve never heard of UT recording auditions). The room had a similar vibe to the rest of the audition- very relaxed. I wouldn’t say the faculty was over encouraging, but I got smiles when I said hello and introduced myself, which was nice. I slated and did my two pieces- the faculty took notes during the monologues. I was expecting an interview after the audition, as I saw people interviewed last year, but I wasn’t interviewed. No one else appeared to have been interviewed either, as the auditions only lasted about 5 minutes. I’m assuming since they were running behind they decided not to do interviews (if anyone knows different please let me know). The faculty thanked me and I them and that was it. I’m pretty worried about not being interviewed- but am also hoping for the best.
On audition days, there are tours lead around the theatre building, I missed it as it was during my audition- but know the spaces are quite nice and some are newly renovated.
Overall, I enjoyed the audition, nice students, faculty who were calm and attentive, just a great vibe overall. I’d love to hear if anyone else was at the audition today or at the audition in the past!
