UT Austin CS vs USC CSB vs NE CSB

Viterbi has a combined CS+ Business major through Marshall. My daughter applied for it but withdrew when she was accepted to her ED school. That’s what I was referring to in regards to the combined program. I wasn’t talking about being accepted to Viterbi and then later applying to Marshall.

I believe this is the week that recipients are notified if they’re scholarship recipients and with that if I recall correctly comes automatic acceptance into the honors program and honors housing. I don’t think it’s a separate application. These scholarships are half off all the way to full tuition and amazing. Even with half you can earn additional funds through research or other avenues. There’s a relatively new honors dorm as well on campus. You should go to the USC forum to learn more about it. You need to apply by the deadline to be eligible for these scholarships. I believe it’s 12/1 of every admissions cycle. Usually notification occurs end of January but this year they’re late.

The page linked spoke specifically about the CS + Business major, not separate applications to Viterbi and Marshall.

Just to note, @lkg4answers has a daughter who is a Trustee Scholar at USC Viterbi, so she knows the ins and outs there. My D21 is an applicant to Viterbi, and my D20 was accepted to Marshall last year. I, too, was curious about the honors program you are talking about. It’s my understanding there is “honors” housing for scholarship recipients, but I don’t believe the classes taken are any different. I would love to know if this was the case.

Thank you all for your valuable insight into the program and schools. So definitely UT CS stands out with us being in state unless we see a decent scholarship in USC and Honors. At UT, uust need to figure out the Business minor and CS being tough program . I do not see DD looking for path as programmer.

Then why does she want to do a combined CS + Business track? Employers are going to assume she wants to be a programmer who works on business applications.

I just confirmed with my friend. There is optional honors housing, there are honors classes, and there are other perks as well especially during non-covid times. Also registration at USC is fantastic according to her.

Also not sure why anyone would do CS at UT if they’re not interested in this field. Plenty other routes to go. Seems like business consulting would be a better fit or even data analytics with consulting.

Could you link to honors classes by any chance? I can’t find anything about that.

No, i don’t but if your student isn’t accepted this week then they aren’t awarded one of those scholarships so it’s moot.but for more info I would go to the usc forum. I know a few people who’s kids have them and love it there. They would have gone elsewhere had they not received those as USC wasn’t any of their first choices but it was hard to turn down the money in each of their cases.

I believe the honors housing might also be available to NMSC scholars, so this week isn’t determinative. I’m going to look into this more.

Yes could be those as well.

Yes, registration is very easy for Viterbi students and class sizes are very small. McCarthy Honors dorm is open to half and full tuition scholarship recipients including National Merit Presidential Scholars who are not notified of acceptance early.

Could your friend be talking about Thematic Option in the Dornslife College of L&S? Thematic Option > USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences

No. I have 3 friends who’s kids have all been Viterbi recipients of the scholarships. Two are Trustee scholars and one is a Presidential. The Presidential also got an additional stipend and is the Viterbi/Marshall combined one.

I think it’s best to post about your own personal experiences here. I realize you mean well but some of your posts have not been accurate about USC and they could be misleading for those interested in USC. We are all trying to help each other here but second hand info that is unverified doesn’t really help anyone.

No problem! This is why I suggested to you a few times to go to the USC forum for some of the questions you kept asking me!

I’m fine with that, I just encourage you to not post things that are not within your personal knowledge.

I have personal knowledge on it as my daughter applied to the joint program and while she pulled her app out friends didn’t so we went through the process with them and have experienced and compared the honors programs with one another. I didn’t mention the National Merit stuff because it totally slipped my mind. Most of the stuff you can also find out on your own by looking through their website or from having visited the school.

You have disparaged USC in this thread based on info you cannot provide evidence for and reference an honors program that you also do not have evidence for. You do not have a child at USC and do not have personal information to back up your statements. That’s all I am saying, Let’s help each other with our own personal experiences and first hand info. No one is interested in what someone heard second hand from their friends.

Disparaged? Ah ok whatever you say! You should take your anger and direct it elsewhere. I wish the best of luck to your daughter.

I think you misunderstand me. I have no anger. I just want to ensure that anyone reading this thread in the future is not misled by inaccuracies.

I believe you might be referring to Viterbi Fellows. Although it is an honor, it isn’t an honors program. It provides funding for a student to do research and a stipend on top of that. http://viterbiadmission.usc.edu/fellows/
