Instate tuition for texas, no financial aid. What will be the best option. Strong CS background want to be a tech entrepreneur or work with start ups . Thanks . Rice decision pending but feel really good about it .
Based on geography, the choice is a matter of personal preference.
Based on quality of programs, the three options are tied.
Therefore the correct answer is Austin, Texas & the University of Texas.
Just to be clear…you have been accepted to UTA and GA Tech in your desired majors? And awaiting UIUC and Rice decisions?
That’s correct
I’d think really really hard before turning down Turing. That’s a top-notch opportunity and a great financial value. Rice would be tempting for the overall experience (residential colleges, etc.) and strong academics, but academics-wise it’s not the most interdisciplinary-friendly place. (A double major can be done but it’s not particularly easy nor facilitated. Although a major plus a minor would be very doable.) GT is great but its strong reputation still doesn’t top Turing - everyone in CS knows that UT’s reputation is excellent and Turing is the cream of that crop. Basically, you’d have to have some other compelling reason, beyond ranking/reputation, to pay quite a lot more for either of the alternatives over UT. Congrats on having excellent options!
Thank you for your valuable input. It does make a lot of sense to stay at UT. Would you be able to comment further between Turing and CSB programs? CSB is a relatively new program but from what I can read , CS honors course material is similar to Turing. Does dual degree with CBHP merit strong consideration? It appears to be similar to M&T U Penn and MET Berkeley program that are very highly regarded. Thanks.
Why not wait until all your acceptances come in and compare financial aid packages/programs then. UT will probably be the best price performer since you reside in Texas.
Based on household income, I know it for fact that I will have no financial aid from any place. Given all programs are so close to each other, UT Austin seems to be the most sensible choice. I’m just torn between CSB and Turing at this point.
Are you free to switch? I’m not familiar with their policies in that regard.
Even if the foundational CS courses are the same, I would expect the Turing curriculum to devote more time to going deep on CS theory; the time to acquire depth on the business side has to come from somewhere. So, it all depends what kind of focus you want. The important question is whether and when you’re able to switch tracks.
I have time to decide which track to chose as have been accepted to both. So its really not switching but more about which one to pick. I have no core curriculum requirements due to existing texas college credits . In fact, I can theoretically finish requirements for either one in 3 years . I do plan to use the extra year focusing on AI/Robotics ( at least thats the current plan)
It really does sound like UTA has everything you want. Does GT have the same academically, something that approaches Turing, and the ability to graduate early and/or focus on AI/robotics?
I wouldn’t let UIUC and Rice into the decision matrix yet, because you haven’t yet been admitted.
If you are certain you would not attend Rice or UIUC even if admitted you should withdraw your applications to free up a spot for someone else.
The GOTO Turing events over the next few weeks are great. I believe CSB has a similar one. You should attend both for as many hours as possible, chat with prospective students and decide which cohort you want to take classes with over the next 2 years. Turing will also have a discord server set up for prospective student discussion.
Have you reviewed the CSB sample course sequence (Academics | Texas CSB) and compared it with the requirement for a business Minor (Specialized Business Minors | Business Options | McCombs School of Business)
It’s cool that you can be accepted to more than one program and then choose. That is very much not a thing with our public U’s here in California!!
Where to find this? Accepted in Turing CS but didn’t get any info in this regard.
I don’t know when this information will be blasted out to all accepted students, but looking through the UT CS Turing page, this appears up to date information: >goto_Turing | Department of Computer Science
If you choose one, could you still take any courses for the other as outside electives?
OP shouldn’t feel the need to withdraw their Rice or UIUC app before decisions come out (unless of course OP accepts UTA or GTech). What seems sure today might very well not be after another acceptance or two.
If I elect Turing, I still will be able to do business minor alongside. CSB as you may already know is a CS honors and CBHP honors dual degree program (BS plus BBA). Until 3 years ago, a select few students from Turing were able to do business honors major as well. Then UT decided to combine the two and created CSB. Now Turing students cant do business major . CSB students don’t take honors CS classes with Turing students but they have the same CS honors classes taken by their own cohort of 20-25 students. Since most CSB students have large amount of college credits as freshmen, they are in a position to take electives in either business or CS ( or both) down the road. Since CS is my primary focus, I intend to use my junior and senior year in AI / robotics/ machine learning concentration.
I am curious how does CSB or MET for that matter translate to real world. If taking a regular job would it not be on either the business side or technology side?
For starting own company or being CEO/CTO or top management roles CSB would be more relevant i think.
Anything i am just thinking aloud if CSB/MET is an alternative to CS+MBA which saves time and money …
