UT Austin US vs Global Rankings

I have noticed that generally, UT ranks around 50 in the United States, but it generally ranks around 30 in the world. What is the reason for this difference? What different criteria are these rankings calculated using?

Whoa don’t all answer at once at once

@varygud diffrent ranking websites , different companies look for different things when ranking and the world and us rankers are different companies

What are the differences in what they are looking for? US News has UT at 53 in the nation and 30 in the world, which confused me.

All you have to do is look on each of their websites and find their criteria list. They’re on there somewhere you can just compare them

Alright thank you!

I think what is more important than the overall grade, is the grade for the field/area you plan to study. For example a school could be highly regarded in Liberal Arts but not Business, or high in Engineering but not in the Sciences. So if you wanted to be an engineer then the school would make sense, a biology major might want to look elsewhere. Overall grades are just a mishmash of all the different disciplines.

Clearly it is different criteria. Texas is not the only school whose rankings are flipped in the US v. World rankings, even when the rankings are compiled by the same ranking service. For example, many private selective schools like Rice, Emory, and Vanderbilt significantly outrank UT on US News national rankings with those schools consistently being ranked in the top 20 and UT is at 53. On the other hand, UT is significantly higher ranked than those school in US News World rankings with UT being ranked number 30, but with Emory coming in at 84 and Rice and Vanderbilt at 89. See also Wisconsin and Minnesota jump from 47 and 71 in the US National Rankings to 27 and 29 in the world rankings.

I suspect that US News world rankings are more highly influenced by the individual department rankings than US News national rankings. Hence, schools like UT, Wisconsin and Minnesota who have highly ranked individual departments perform better in the world rankings than they do in the national rankings. Whereas small selective private schools like the University of Rochester, Brandeis, Tufts…perform better on the national rankings but are penalized on the world ranking for not having highly rated individual departments.
