Hey there,
Looking for some expert advice on which college to choose from, UT Austin or U Florida for Pre-Med track. Both are great ranking wise, but looking for:
- What is the average GPA students graduate from both UT Austin and U Florida?
- Which college has better options to get to Med school after?
- Which City has more exposure to internships, summer programs?
Thanks!!
For Pre-Med, UF and UT-Austin are close to identical (in terms of the number of medical school applicants they generate each year). .
- For UF:
https://ir.aa.ufl.edu/uffacts/degrees-grades/
- Both about the same.
- Austin is the state capital while UF is a college town. Austin has a population of 950K vs Gainesville 133K.
With that being said, both Austin and Gainesville offer plenty for pre-meds. UF is the home of UF Health, and UF offers plenty of undergraduate research opportunities, and ECs (related to health), etc. Most "pre-meds" tend to stay in town and take advantage of UT-Austin's or UF's associated hospitals and/or research centers. Both schools are also well recruited, so internships are available across the country, they are not limited to Austin or Gainesville.
I had posted this in another thread…
The AAMC puts out a listing of “Undergraduate Institutions Supplying Applicants to U.S. Medical Schools by Applicant Race and Ethnicity”.
https://www.aamc.org/data/facts/applicantmatriculant/86042/factstablea2.html
For 2018-2019:
1: UCLA with 1,014
2: UF with 852
3: Michigan with 815
4 UT-Austin with 747
5: UC-Berkeley with 662
Thank you for the information!! This is very helpful.
This is indeed helpful but do keep in mind that you look at enrollment number and percentage of ones getting into med schools as though numbers of big schools may be higher, percentage wise they are lower than many smaller schools.

It looks like number of students (which school has more students competing to go) and race (who has more Asians or more Latino) makes it confusing to understand which colleges are actually sending higher percentage.
Unless you are from Texas you will have a slim chance of getting in to UTA. If you are from Texas and want to go to UF you will have the upper hand getting in to UF since I see lower acceptance criteria from OOS at UF.
@Riversider The % of students at these large public universities that are “pre-med” is also much smaller than smaller schools, like Rice or Emory.
What the “# of applicants” can tell us, when a school has a large number, is that it’s likely good fit for “pre-med” students (offering easy access to ECs, undergraduate research, pre-med advising, large # of “pre-med” type majors, etc.).
That UF generates more applicants than Rice, doesn’t mean UF is “better” for pre-med, only that UF is highly supportive and a popular choice for pre-med students. The same with UCLA, UC-B, UT-Austin, etc.
@Riversider, What you say makes sense but I am neither a resident of Texas or Florida, but got accepted into both colleges. For UF, I got into Honors college and Research Scholars program as well. Being an Asian, makes it more difficult for me to chose the right one, as % of Asians is way less in UF than UT Austin and that is the most confusing part of me and can’t decide.
@Gator88NE
This is an absolute example of comparing apples and oranges as UF has more applicants on pre-med track than Rice’s total enrolment for whole university. It is less likely to get better support in a huge group, even if they try. Think of it as guidance counselling at a smaller private prep school vs your large overcrowded suburban public high school.
However, it’s much easier getting accepted and affording UF compared to smaller exclusive schools so no pint in comparing two. A right candidate can get into medical schools from any college though it may be difficult to get into programs of their choice or top medical schools.
@Bestsuited4me If you aren’t getting in state tuition then UF seems like a better choice for you. Probably you are getting more merit money as well as UT is not into merit scholarships. As an Asian you’ll stand out at UF during medical school admission process but not among big crowd of Asian pre-meds at UT.
As far as academics and environment, probably you’ll like UT better. Texas medical schools are more affordable so that’s an added bonus as you can be eligible to apply as a Texas residents.
I think the latest numbers had UF at 8% (vs 21% at UT), but it does feel like it’s a bit more, due to the large number of Asian grad students on campus. If this is a concern (and I can understand why it would be), you may want to google UF Asian clubs, etc, and check them out.
I wasn’t implying that UF was 'better" than Rice (a far more expensive, private school), only that the schools that generate large number of applicants (and Rice is one of those schools, as is the 30 to 40 in the AAMC listing), tend to be supportive of pre-med students. In this case, my point was UT-Austin and UF are good choices for Pre-med.
I don’t think that’s how medical school admissions works, especially when you consider they are applying to med schools across the country, not just UT or UF.
Anyway, in this case, we’re talking about 300 Asian applicants from UT-Austin, vs 180 at UF. Not that much of a difference.
Environment is really based on your personal preference, but perhaps you can explain why the academics is better?
That’s a good point. How do you become eligible to apply as a Texas resident? Do you have to become a resident or is it by completing your undergraduate degree, in-state? I think the most common method to earn in-state residency is by owning residential real estate and showing proof of primary residence in Texas for 1 year.
@Likebikes, “UTA” refers to UT-Arlington. The main campus is referred to as UT or UT-Austin.
Just like to point out that this is an SEC forum, S! E! C! S! E! C!
Hence:
UT= University of Tennessee
USC= University of South Carolina
UGA= That school where they have a hard time understanding it’s the "Florida-Georgia Game and not the Georgia-Florida Game…
Well, since the OP was asking about UT Austin, it’s obvious that UT in this thread refers to the school in Texas.
