Hey everyone, I thought I’d start a thread before the UT Austin crowd kicks us off their thread. So my DD applied and got accepted into the usual regional big schools, ie Arkansas, OSU, OU, TCU, Baylor (money but not enough) and UT CAP and waiting TAMU. As much as many of her classmates were upset with being CAPped, this is a good route for her. She is a PSYCH major and CAP is only really good for COLA majors. Our son is at UT Austin now and UT is her number 1 school. We live in the North Dallas area, so would be interested in others in this area for future travel/support etc. I suspect she’ll make her decision once TAMU decides her fate. I think Dorms at UTSA is the biggest question. We would certainly like her to be around other CAP students. Alvarez is more like the typical dorm where Laurel and Chapparal are more like apartments.
@TXDad56 Thank you for starting this thread! We live in San Antonio. DD was accepted to University of Houston, Texas Tech, UT Dallas, UTSA, Texas State, and North Texas. The UTSA CAP option filled almost immediately and we were lucky to get a spot. She has accepted her UTSA CAP offer and reserved a room in Alvarez on the Leadership & Service floor. I hope she has a chance to meet other CAP students. She is a Psych major although not 100% set on that.
I was refreshing the screen for two minutes leading up to the 6PM open time. I certainly thought it was going to timeout but got it. Based on others comments, I think it’s safe to say you have one shot at it, once the window opens up, at least for UTSA. Not sure how much longer UTSA will be a CAP option, based on what I’ve read. Tell me why she chose Alvarez over the other two. From videos, the Alvarez rooms look small and there’s only one person to a room ie lonely? The apartment type looks like there’s a kitchenette, shared space and upto 4 people to a suite.
@TXDad56 She would have preferred Laurel since it has a kitchenette and living room. However, Alvarez was a bit cheaper and since this is our third kid in college we were anxious to save a little money. Also, the Alvarez rooms are singles but have a connecting bath with the next room, and so I figure she can chat with the person that lives there. Lastly, Alvarez is the only dorm so far as I could tell that has the living communities and the Leadership & Service floor option appealed to her because it only has 67 residents and they have required volunteer activities. So hopefully she can meet a few people doing the required volunteer hours and possibly build her resume a bit at the same time. We have two kids who went to UT and we made them choose the cheapest living option for all four years, so she is spoiled just to be getting a room to herself as far as I’m concerned! Anyway, I hope to hear from others who will have freshman in UTSA CAP this fall. As well as any former UTSA CAP students or parents from previous years.
We are also from the North Texas area (Lovejoy High School in Lucas) and my daughter is majoring in Psychology as well! She really wants the dorms that had the kitchen because she thinks she is going to make healthy meals…I know otherwise!
Good to know. Until we know for certain about TAMU, I’m in a wait and learn mode. We’re not far from Lucas.
@lltjenkins did your DD get a dorm at UTSA? Concerned with this delay at A&M. Not sure how fast dorms go at UTSA. I still think UT CAP is the best path for my DD, but right now, I’m not sure where her head is at. She doesn’t want to talk about it until A&M decision is done.
My daughter did get a 4 bedroom in Chaparral Village with one other girl. Everything in Laurel Village was gone I think she said because that was her first choice and I don’t believe there were any 2 bedrooms left at Chaparral. I’m not 100% sure since her date/time to log in was on Wednesday afternoon and she was at school. I have other friends that still are waiting on A&M. That’s got to be frustrating!
Does anyone know for AP/Dual Credit courses if you should send your transcript with or without credits to your CAP school? My daughter wants those credits to be applied when she goes to Austin her sophomore year. UTSA said to go ahead and send the credit transcript…
@lltjenkins the other girl was a friend or did UTSA assign/pair her with your daughter? Chaparral looks nice too. As for AP/DCs, not sure about that. You probably know they can’t be used for CAP at UTSA. My LHS couldn’t use any of his for his major at UT, ie AP-ECON. This route doesn’t work that well with AP/DCs as they want to see the students complete these at the CAP school prior to acceptance. BUT, hopefully they’ll make easy A’s !
I’m pretty sure A&M is a PSA (ie CAP) or a Denial at this point but until it’s final…
@TXDad56 I don’t know if they fill up but Glynda at UTSA housing is super nice and can answer any questions. Alvarez still has rooms I know that. Also, we have not heard back from A&M either and have just given up on the Aggies at this point.
I have givin up as well. I would still rather my DD do the UT CAP regardless. I honestly think in the long run she would be happier and more lifetime proud to have graduated UT. It’s her number 1 school. We are hoping that she gets there herself. It really needs to be her decision.
My daughter filled out the roommate questionnaire and when she logged in to pick a room she was looking for something quick as she wasn’t sure if it was going to fill up like the CAP sign up did! She had specific building numbers she wanted that were closer to campus than others. Again, Laurel was her first choice and was full so Chap was next. She picked building 4 and she said all they had left was 3rd Fl and she saw a 4 bedroom with one girl already signed up for one of the rooms. She read her quick bio and they matched on all of the roommate questions and she thought she sounded good. That’s my kid! We shall see. They also say that UTSA can switch your roommate or room within the building depending on what other requests they get. If you specifically list another student as a roommate choice (both parties have to do this) they will put you together. I would like her to be with other CAP students. I’m not sure if that was in my daughter’s profile or not, but housing will be able to see her status. I hope this helps. Let me know if your daughter decides on UTSA and if she’s interested in one of the other two rooms I can send that info.
Thank you for starting this page. DS is appealing UT decision, but he did get UTSA CAP which is great for him because he wants to major in Psych. He’s in at TAMU (not a great a Psych program), TTU, Tx State, Bama, Ole Miss, Colorado and waiting to hear from TCU, SMU and Pepperdine. He didn’t do Early Action on the last three - ugh. Hoping he gets into SMU (2nd best Psych program in the state) and they give him a good scholarship or merit aid option. He is very seriously considering UTSA though because like everyone else, UT is his #1 choice and has been drilled into his head since he was born. LOL. He has not received anything from UTSA about his EID so he can register for housing, etc. Do you think we should contact them? Would really like for him to be with other CAP’d kids too so they can keep each other focused, etc. Unforutnately, he has already taken most of the curriculum through Dual Enrollment and AP, but he’s willing to redo. I don’t know if this is the smartest choice. He has received really great scholarships from other schools. Feeling late to the game, overwhelmed and wondering if I should just send him to Bama! Any feedback welcome. Thanks!
@jivey23 your son has some good choices already and still more to come. Our DD got Baylor but the money wasn’t near enough to consider it. We’re trying to put a financial limit at the cost of Texas in-state schools. Even more reason why UT CAP at UTSA looks really good right now, but until all the decisions are in, which is only TAMU now, we wait. Might be the same course of action for you, especially with SMU. Our son got good money from them but he preferred UT and being further away from us/home.I’ve not heard from UTSA yet either. Might not be a bad idea to call them and some paperwork going.
@lltjenkins I know the UT CAP admin person I talked to said UTSA will try to pair CAP students together. I don’t expect a good result for TAMU, so my plans would be to have any/all other UTSAs CAP students in the area, to get together maybe at a Starbucks or Braums in hopes that they connect and form a group and maybe potential roommates. Hoping that can happen soon.
Well that was quick. TAMU PSA is set and now the DD ponders her decision…soon I hope.
I would contact UTSA. I have called them a few times and they are very helpful. UT San Antonio CAP Contacts:

Sabina Kapoor in Academic Advising @ 210-458-5170 - SABINA.BHATTATHIRY-KAPOOR@UTSA.EDU
My daughter has also taken the majority of the curriculum through Dual Enrollment and AP but she was able to find 30 hours to take from the approved CAP course work.
That sounds great!
