Thank you! I remember reading (can’t find it now) that NM scholarships are awarded separately. Maybe the AES is for the kids to qualify for the out-of-state tuition waiver.
Yes - it can be higher than $7557 and it can also be lower. The estimate is very much major dependant because of the added fees in certain courses. Some majors are estimated at $6996. My daughter is a sophomore. The estimates for incoming freshmen with her major is $7671. However we locked into the guaranteed rate the fall of 2019 - so the first year it was a little more expensive - but now we are locked in at $7,315.
Thanks for the explanation about the tuition. I am curious about the guaranteed rate and will look into it more if D decides to go to UTD.
Guaranteed rate is higher at the beginning but same for 4 years.
Non guaranteed (Variable) rate is lower at the beginning but much higher at the end.
At the end either way is about the same total.
See below screenshot from Galaxy portal for in-state tuition, left column is fixed, right column is variable. And below is for freshmen attending Fall 2020. For Fall 2021 it will be higher.
Semester 1 | $7,557 | $6,996 | |
---|---|---|---|
Semester 2 | $7,557 | $6,996 | |
Semester 3 | $7,557 | $7,269 | Assuming an estimated 3.9% increase in the Variable Tuition Rate |
Semester 4 | $7,557 | $7,269 | |
Semester 5 | $7,557 | $7,552 | Assuming an estimated 3.9% increase in the Variable Tuition Rate |
Semester 6 | $7,557 | $7,552 | |
Semester 7 | $7,557 | $7,847 | Assuming an estimated 3.9% increase in the Variable Tuition Rate |
Semester 8 | $7,557 | $7,847 | |
TOTAL SUM | $60,456 | $59,328 |
And back in Fall 2016, the freshmen class paid $5906 tuition for fall semester. (Fall 2020 saw 27.9% increase)
So $13K or $16K with $1K or $3K stipend per semester was very generous back then as the money was enough to cover everything (tuition/dorm/meals) . Students practically got free college.
Now
$16K no stipend, would mean parents will need to pay $12K+ for tuition/dorm/meal per year
$13K no stipend, would mean parents will need to pay $15K+ for tuition/dorm/meal per year.
I used + sign because 2021 Fall tuition rate is not available and likely will be higher than $7557 per semester.
The 1 thing to note prior to 2020 is that it was not just $16K + stipend, it was Full tuition and fees + Stipend. Thus, the award amount increases as tuition increases.
An exception to the decreased attractiveness of UTD to Texas students outside of Dallas is the case of Austin area students who are denied acceptance or their choice of major at UT Austin. Just think how many even higher stats Austin area UT-denied students that have no nearby 4 year public college to attend without paying for dorms. This could also be the case to a lesser degree for some Bryan/College Station applicants-I’m not sure. UTD is ranked just below UT Austin and TAMU among TX public schools, so even without significant AES, it’s not hard to see why UTD still holds some attraction to Texas students outside of Dallas. I think that’s what UTD has started banking on.
I think UT Dallas will still be very attractive to many academically focused students. In my son’s case, he has no interest in UT (dad’s alma mater) or TAMU (mom’s alma mater) based on their size, location, etc.
Agree, but most of those got denied major in UT Austin should find A&M acceptance, and the most important part is A&M is $4-5K cheaper per year than UTD and much more well known in other states.
One thing UTD counts heavily on is their students’ employment rate, with so many companies moving their HQ to Texas, UTD’s business, engineering and computer science almost have 100% employment upon graduation. At the end employment is all that matters.
I agree about TAMU being the most popular second choice, but it does have a unique culture, campus, and setting that doesn’t appeal to all students. When my D toured, it was a hard pass, which was a little disheartening because of its affordability, location, and ranking.
Where are you seeing the 15K estimate for room and board at UTD? Do you have a link? I’m seeing estimates for this year at around 5900 per semester or $11.8k/year.
If anyone else sees the room and board at UTD being around 15K/year, as was represented above, please don’t hesitate to chime in here. I’m not able to find that information. Thanks so much!
My son’s room and board was never $15K/Year. In 2019-2020 school year, he lived in the University Commons as a freshman which costs $3777/semester and had the Comet 14 meal plan at $1948/semester. This comes to about $11,450 a year. For 2020-2021, it was ~$500/year cheaper since he stayed at Canyon Creek. I think for 2021-2022 school year, it’s a little higher, but definitely less than $12k.
Would it be safe to estimate 27k for tuition, room/board, and meals?
Hello All, I am new to this. I have several questions. DD just checked galaxy and found out she got $3K AES. From UTDallas office of financial aid website, the Cost of Attendance calculator shows ~$32K a year for current year 2020-2021 not including summer.
No matter I select 12 or 15 credit hours per semester the figure is the same. So besides $16K for tuition, can anyone tell me next year it will be another 15-16K for the rest of expenses?
From the COA calculator, it says Room and Meals as $5881, but the housing I am looking is $4235 and the comet-19 meal plan is $2250 total is more than $5881, any current parents can tell me what plan your kids are using? I know picking a fewer meal plans like comet-13 is cheaper, but that will mean I have to spend another few $K for her to eat elsewhere. Any thoughts?
I think that’s a safe assumption. Here is the estimate for 2020-2021
Tuition: $6996-$7557/semester for school of natural science
Room and Meals: $5881/semester
~$27K/year
We live in northwest Frisco so for DD to travel 20 miles to school everyday is not practical. I know someone here have DS/DD currently in UTD, is next year going to see increase in expenses?
The $4235 is the price for a 1 bedroom apartment at university village apartment. My understanding is that all incoming freshman who wants to live on campus are required to live in the university commons which is $3900/semester for a 3/1. As for the meal plan, we originally purchased a comet-14 for my son, but changed it to comet-10 the following semester since he prefers to eat at other places with his roommates and friends on the weekend.
My engineering is $7456-$8017 and that’s for fall 2020. You cannot assume past year’s guarantee rate to be your rate.
Fall 2021 is not out yet, it will be higher. If you check CC forum back in 2016 it was $5906.
And I stand corrected $15K I said earlier was not room and board alone, the COA you can see yourself the extra $15K-$16K is the rest of expenses.
UTD is in urban city unlike college towns like College Station and UT Austin. UTD’s shuttle comet cruiser network is much smaller compared to UT Shuttle in Austin. UTD comet shuttle relies on connecting to DART which by all means ok to guys but not that safe for girls. UT Austin shuttles are more frequent and reach much farther around Austin in all 4 directions.
Most UTD student still need a car especially if you are not purchasing full 19 meals/week plan. That expenses is not in COA.
